This sequel to Gom on Windy Mountain recounts Gom's journey beyond his mountain home to the place called Far Away, in search of his mother, Harga, who left the mountain shortly after Gom's birth and is reputed to be the greatest wizard in the world. Gom is gone only a day when he feels someone following him.

Meg has nightmares, the same ugly dreams over and over again. She finds herself drawn irresistibly to the entrance of a sphere, an enormous black void while some strange voice in the corners of her mind, is asking her, begging her to help him. What she assumes is only a strange figment of her subconscious mind turns into a flesh-and-blood human being. The only way Meg can save him is to enter the Dark World itself.

For Gom Gobblechuck, life on the mountain is hard and lonely - but every once in a while his rune necklace tingles against his chest, as if to call him away from the mountain to the grand adventure of discovering new worlds.
