Fr. Frederick William Faber C.O. (1814 - 1863) was a noted English hymn writer and theologian. He converted from Anglicanism to Roman Catholicism in 1845 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1847. In this book, he meditates on the mystery of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem.

This remarkable book contains a series of pithy notes taken down by Maxim Gorky during his visit with Tolstoi (alternative spelling: "Tolstoy") over a period of several months. Also included is a long and detailed letter concerning Tolstoi. Very insightful.

From the Preface, the author explains the scope of his classic study: The present inquiry is the outcome of a request to write an article on “Atheism” for a projected dictionary of the religious history of classical antiquity. On going through the sources, I found that the subject might well deserve a more comprehensive treatment than the scope of a dictionary would allow. It is such a treatment that I have attempted in the following audio.
