Silappadhikaram, one of the five greatest epics of Tamil literature, is about the story of Kovalan and Kannagi. This piece of literature was originally written by Ilango Adigal sometime between 4th and 6th century CE. Kovalan and Kannagi grow up in the land of Puhar, a coastal city in the Chola Kingdom of Tamil Nadu. They get married and live a blissful marital life, until Kovalan falls for a danseuse, Madhavi. Leaving behind his home and Kannagi, Kovalan spends his money and time for Madhavi.
