As the First World War reaches its final year, an illicit love affair is beginning between a 16-year-old boy and a young woman married to a soldier at the front. They meet secretly in her flat on the outskirts of Paris, in cornfields and on river banks. When she receives letters from her husband, they burn them together. Intoxicated by passion, they cannot bear to end their affair, even when it causes a scandal among their friends and neighbours. Instead, they can only hurtle towards tragedy.

"Le Diable au corps" sont les confidences d'un jeune homme qui retrace sa rencontre amoureuse alors qu'il était adolescent, avec une jeune fille tout juste mariée à un soldat parti au front. Le contexte de la première guerre mondiale est abordé avec cynisme et détachement : c'est avant tout la possibilité d'un dérèglement des mœurs, d'une grande liberté laissée à ceux qui sont restés chez eux.

Doch als ihr Mann im Ersten Weltkrieg an der Front kämpft, lässt sie sich auf eine Affäre mit ihrem jungen Verehrer ein, obwohl die Beziehung keine Zukunft hat. Als der Soldat aus dem Krieg zurückkehrt, endet die Beziehung. Doch Marthe ist schwanger von François.

Dans le Paris des années folles, deux étudiants, François de Séryeuse et le Comte Anne d'Orgel se lient d'amitié. Jusqu'au jour où Séryeuse rencontre la Comtesse Mahaut, et en tombe follement amoureux. "Le Bal du Comte d'Orgel" a été publié à titre posthume, Raymond Radiguet ayant été emporté par une fière typhoïde peu de temps après la rédaction du roman.
