Rückkehr auf die Insel. Nach langer Zeit auf See kehrt Cass Lynch als Skipper eines nachgebauten Wikingerbootes zu Filmaufnahmen auf die Shetland-Inseln zurück. Eines Abends findet sie auf dem Wikingerboot eine Frauenleiche, die Schwester der Hauptdarstellerin des Films. Der Star selbst hat bereits mehrere anonyme Drohbriefe erhalten, die Videokopien der gedrehten Szenen wurden gestohlen und am Strand verbrannt. Cass muss beweisen, dass ihr Vater unschuldig ist und dass auch sie nicht die Mörderin ist. Doch das fällt ihr nicht leicht, denn sie hat ein dunkles Geheimnis.

Der Tote am See. Auf einem romantischen Spaziergang in den schottischen Highlands entdecken Detective Inspector Gavin Macrae und die begeisterte Seglerin Cass Lynch eine Leiche. Ein Fuhrunternehmer, dem man Unterschlagungen vorwirft, ist seit längerer Zeit verschwunden. Doch offenbar hat jemand etwas dagegen, dass sich Cass nach ihm erkundigt. Ihr Boot wird von den Halteleinen losgeschnitten, in stürmischer Nacht treibt sie hinaus aufs Meer.
