When German intelligence officer Captain Reinhardt is reassigned to a new branch of the military police, his position separates him from the allies he has made. The Western Front, July 1918. Gregor Reinhardt is a young lieutenant in a stormtrooper battalion on the Western Front when one of his subordinates is accused of murdering a group of officers and then subsequently trying to take his own life. Not wanting to believe his friend could have done what he is accused of, Reinhardt begins to investigate. He starts to uncover the outline of a conspiracy at the heart of the German army, a conspiracy aimed at ending the war on the terms of those who have a vested interest in a future for Germany that resembles her past.

Berlin, 1947. L'ex-capitaine Gregor Reinhardt a retrouvé un poste d'inspecteur à la police criminelle de la ville. Début 1944, à Sarajevo, le capitaine Gregor Reinhardt est réaffecté dans les Feldjagerkorps, une nouvelle branche de la police militaire aux pouvoirs très étendus. Ce nouveau rôle l'éloigne de son réseau d'alliés et d'amis allemands qui tentent de s'opposer au régime nazi. Alors que l'armée allemande tâche de se retirer de Yougoslavie sans trop de pertes, Reinhardt est contacté par les témoins d'un massacre de civils commis, semble-t-il, par les milices croates oustachis. Mais Reinhardt pressent très vite qu'il y a là bien plus qu'un simple incident de guerre.

Gregor Reinhardt est officier dans l'Abwehr, en poste à Sarajevo en 1943. Avant la guerre, il était policier à la secton criminelle de Berlin, la fameuse "Kripo". C'est un homme consciencieux, un militaire qui a toujours tenu le nazisme à distance. C'est aussi un homme profondément triste depuis qu'il a perdu sa femme et son fils. L'une est morte dans ses bras à l'hôpital et l'autre lui a totalement échappé, tombé sous l'emprise du nouveau régime et parti combattre sur le front de l'Est.
