But as they work to identify the victim and their killer, the discovery of a second body begins to spark fears that The Aston Strangler is back. And as the stakes rise for the team, so do the tensions brewing within it. When DCS Kat Frank is accused of putting the wrong man behind bars all those years ago, AIDE Lock - the world's first AI Detective - pursues the truth about what happened with relentless logic.

Doch wie soll ein Computer menschliche Verbrechen nachvollziehen? Durch die Entdeckung einer zweiten gekreuzigten Leiche, ebenfalls ein Mann, werden weitere Opfer immer wahrscheinlicher.

Was unterscheidet Mensch und Maschine? Die verwitwete Ermittlerin Kat kennt sich mit Verlust aus, Vermisstenfälle sind ihre Spezialität. Auf ihre untrüglichen Instinkte und ihr Bauchgefühl kann sie sich verlassen. Nun wird ihr im Rahmen eines Pilotprojekts der Polizei eine künstliche Intelligenz zur Seite gestellt, die in Form eines Hologramms in Erscheinung tritt und auf nüchternen Datenanalysen basiert. Locks regelkonforme, logikorientierte Art kollidiert mit Kats intuitivem Vorgehen, und doch sollen sie gemeinsam alte Vermisstenfälle lösen, um die Einsatzfähigkeit von KIs im Polizeidienst zu erproben.
