Six years after the end of the Great War, the country is still in mourning. After a desperate search, the police make a horrifying discovery. Noting Ruth's perfectly made-up face and provocative clothing, the empty liquor bottles and love letters that litter her apartment, the detectives leap to convenient conclusions, fuelled by neighbourhood gossip and speculation.

Sommer 1965, die Straßen New Yorks flimmern in der Hitze. Eines Morgens findet die alleinerziehende Ruth Malone das Zimmer ihrer beiden kleinen Kinder leer vor, das Fenster steht offen. Angeheizt durch Spekulationen aus der Nachbarschaft, zieht die Polizei einfache Schlüsse. Auch Boulevardreporter Pete Wonicke, für den der Fall die erste große Story ist, verurteilt Ruth zunächst.
