Le metamorfosi o L'asino d'oro (Asinus aureus), è un'opera di Lucio Apuleio, del II secolo d. CE' l'unico romanzo antico latino pervenuto interamente ad oggi. Nel 158 l'autore fu processato per magia,e nel suo discorso difensivo egli non citò quest'opera , che pure tratta di magia, di qui si deduce che l'opera sia successiva a quella data. Il libro è costituito da un soggetto principale, Lucio, e della sua metamorfosi in un asino a seguito di un esperimento non andato a buon fine.

Psyche ist die Tochter eines unbekannten Königs. Sie ist so schön, dass alle aufhören Venus, die Göttin der Schönheit und der Liebe, zu verehren. Darüber ist Venus verärgert. Sie ruft ihren Sohn Amor und befiehlt ihm, Psyche dazu zu bringen, sich in einen schlechten Mann zu verlieben. Dieser hat sich allerdings selbst in die Schönheit verliebt und lässt Psyche in ein märchenhaftes Schloss bringen.

Als die Göttin Venus von der überirdischen Schönheit der Königstochter Psyche erfährt, schickt sie ihren Sohn Amor auf die Erde. Er soll die unliebsame Konkurrentin mit einem schrecklichen Dämon verheiraten. Doch auch Amor erliegt Psyches Schönheit und statt die Wünsche seiner Mutter zu erfüllen, lässt er die Geliebte heimlich in ein abgelegenes Schloss bringen.

Apuleius ist nach Homer der wohl berühmteste Dichter der Antike. Seine humorvollen, erotischen Geschichten sind direkt und lebensnah und zeichnen ein überraschendes Bild seiner Zeit.

Apuleius (125 - ca. 180 n. Chr.) studierte Philosophie in Athen und gehörte der von Platon gegründeten Akademie an. "Amor und Psyche" ist eine Erzählung, die in den einzigen vollständig erhaltenen Roman der Antike "Der goldene Esel" eingebettet ist. Diese märchenhafte Geschichte von Liebe, zerstörerischer Neugier und schließlich glücklichem Ende hat bis heute nichts von ihrem Zauber eingebüßt.
