في لحظات المخاض الصَّعبة تُفارق الأمَّ الحياة، آخر أنفاسها اختلطت بصياح الطفلة التي سُميَت فيما بعد "رنين".. وبقيت هذه المشاهد محفورة في ذاكرة بطل القصّة الطفل الأكبر "حسّان" والذي نصحبه على مدار الرواية بجميع تقلباتِ حياته ابتداءً من زواج والده وطرده من بيتٍ كان يحتفظ برائحة أمّه، انتهاءً باغترابه وأخته مع جدّته صغيرًا في لندن وحنينه إلى الوطن بعدَ أنَّ غضَّ عوده واشتعل شبابه ولكنَّ سفينته تأبى أن تسير معَ الرِّيح.
