"Le manteau" appartient au recueil des "Nouvelles de Pétersbourg", publié en 1843. Ce court texte raconte l'existence simple, limitée, mais heureuse d'un petit fonctionnaire russe, Akaki Akakiévitch Bachmatchkine. Lorsque ses collègues lui font remarquer l'usure de son manteau, pour la première fois, Akaki est sensible aux critiques mesquines et quotidiennes de son entourage, et il se met en tête d'économiser sou après sou pour s'offrir un nouvel habit. This short but powerful novel was acclaimed by Vladimir Nabokov and Mahatma Gandhi as the greatest in the whole of Russian literature. It is one of Tolstoy's most celebrated pieces of late fiction. At the center of the story is an examination of the nature of both life and death and how man can come to terms with death's inevitability. It was widely acclaimed when it was published in 1886 and remains a compelling narrative today.

In June 1862, Dostoevsky left St. Petersburg on his first excursion to Western Europe. Ostensibly making the trip to consult Western specialists about his epilepsy, he also wished to see the source of the Western ideas he believed were corrupting Russia. Over the course of his journey he visited a number of major cities, including Berlin, Paris, London, Florence, Milan, and Vienna. His impressions on what he saw, Winter Notes on Summer Impressions, were first published in the February 1863 issue of "Vremya" (Time), the periodical he edited, and are collected here.
