The year is 1199, the place the Welsh Marches, where young Arthur de Caldicot practises his tilting and archery, learns to be a dutiful page to his father, and waits impatiently to grow up and become a knight. One day his father's friend Merlin gives him a shining black stone. This is her story, written down at her behest by her childhood friend and hero, Arthur de Caldicot. Gatty's dream is to follow Arthur to Jerusalem -- though she has not even understood that Jerusalem is farther away than Ludlow, and across the sea.

Still haunted by the death of her childhood best friend, Jett, Ava returns to her small hometown searching for the truth behind what happened. When she falls into the hands of danger and is saved by a familiar face, Ava attempts to figure out how Jett returned from the dead. In the midst of introducing him into her world, trouble finds her again; but this time, Jett won’t be able to save her.
