In January 1903, at Baker Street, James M. Dodd sees Holmes about a missing friend, Godfrey Emsworth. Dodd and Emsworth served together in the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Second Boer War, which has only just ended. Emsworth was wounded during this war. Dodd has not seen him since the report of his injury leading Dodd to believe something is amiss.

James M. Dodd comes to see Holmes about a missing friend, Godfrey Emsworth. Dodd and Emsworth served together in the Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Second Boer War, which has only just ended. Since Emsworth has always been such a good friend, Dodd is inclined to assume that something must be amiss.

After some cajoling on the part of Watson, Sherlock Holmes takes pen in hand to write about one of his investigations. Watson, who at the time had selfishly deserted Holmes to take a wife, has no notes on this particular case, so we're privileged to hear, in the great detective's own words, the accounting of one of his strangest adventures.
