Februar 1888: Sherlock Holmes ist frustriert. Bei seinen Bemühungen, die geheimnisvolle Nummer Eins der Londoner Unterwelt zu identifizieren, tritt der beratende Detektiv seit Monaten auf der Stelle. Holmes wird von einem alten Studienkollegen um Hilfe gebeten. Dessen Sohn, Robert Foster, arbeitet in Österreich, Tirol bei den Passionsspielen als Bühnenbildner. Eine Mordserie droht das Schauspiel platzen zu lassen. Angst geht unter den Darstellern um. Holmes verspricht den Fall zu übernehmen. Ganz zu Alice´ Leidwesen. Glenn Boulton, der Leiter des Covent Garden Market, bittet Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe. Der Markthändler Peter Bowman ist erschossen aus der Themse gezogen worden. Wenige Tage zuvor wurde der Restaurantbesitzer Sydney Alexander erstochen aufgefunden. Im Gegensatz zur Polizei vermutet Mr. Boulton, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen beiden Morden gibt, schließlich gehörte Mr. Alexander zu Mr. Bowmans Stammkunden. Mr. Boulton äußert den Verdacht, dass die beiden Ermordeten Mitglieder einer Schmugglerbande waren oder einer Schmugglerbande in die Quere gekommen sind.
