Notes from the author: The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. There were always a few holes in Elantris where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be heard after you’ve finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax.

Der Priesterdetektiv Pater Brown wird von Scotland Yard beauftragt, einen mysteriösen Fall zu lösen, bei dem sein Glaubensbruder Gabriel verschwunden ist. Da Pater Brown in dieser Angelegenheit persönlich involviert ist und ihm der nötige Weitblick fehlt, bittet er Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson um Unterstützung. Gemeinsam durchsuchen die Drei die Klosterzelle von Bruder Gabriel und entdecken dabei einen Hohlraum im Boden.

Als Bruder Gabriel leise durch die Eingangshalle zurück zu seiner Klosterzelle schleicht, vernimmt er dumpfe, vertraute Stimmen, die durch die angelehnte Tür seines Labors dringen. Ein unheilvolles Gefühl überkommt ihn, und er macht sich innerlich auf eine Konfrontation mit Sherlock Holmes und Pater Brown gefasst. Als er schließlich das Labor betritt, wird er von Pater Brown auch gleich zur Rede gestellt...

In dieser Folge entbrennt ein kontroverses Gespräch zwischen Sherlock Holmes und Inspektor Lestrade bei Scotland Yard. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, wer von den Brüdern Gabriel und Cedric die Wahrheit sagt. Das Misstrauen zwischen den beiden Ermittlern führt dazu, dass Sherlock Holmes und Inspektor Lestrade ihre Zusammenarbeit einstellen, noch ehe sie richtig begonnen hat.

Während Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson und Pater Brown zusammen mit den Mönchen der Waltham Abbey ihre Mahlzeit einnehmen, wird die Zukunft Bruder Gabriels hitzig diskutiert. Bruder Severin setzt sich durch, dass Bruder Gabriel zur Buße eine einjährige Pilgerreise antreten soll, doch Pater Brown und einige Brüder sind vehement dagegen. Gerade als Pater Brown Abt Thomas darüber informieren will, erreicht Holmes eine dringende Nachricht von Inspektor Lestrade. Aus dieser Nachricht geht hervor, dass Abt Thomas sich schon länger nicht mehr dort befindet, wo Pater Brown und die Brüder ihn bislang vermutet hatten.

Während Pater Brown eine Eildepesche an Auguste Dupin aufgibt, versucht Sherlock Holmes, aus den Pflanzenexperimenten von Bruder Gabriel schlau zu werden. Doch dieser lässt sich nicht in die Karten schauen und kehrt wieder zurück an die Arbeit im Labor. Als eine Woche später immer noch keine Antwort von Dupin eingetroffen ist, beschließen Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson, die Befragung im Kloster ohne seine Unterstützung zu beginnen. Doch noch während sie dabei sind, Bruder Dominik als Ersten auf den Zahn zu fühlen, überschlagen sich auch schon die nächsten Ereignisse...
