Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776-1822), noto con lo pseudonimo di E. T. A. Hoffmann, fu il primo scrittore a mettere su carta la storia dello schiaccianoci, oggetto molto in voga nell’Ottocento e che faceva bella mostra di sé nei mercatini di Natale di tutta la Germania.Il racconto dell’autore tedesco (che fu inoltre pittore, compositore e giurista) venne pubblicato nel 1816 e ispirò anche la versione di Alexandre Dumas, dalla quale Tchaïkovski trarrà uno dei balletti più famosi di tutti i tempi.I piccoli protagonisti della favola sono Marie e Fritz, due bambini in trepidante attesa dei doni di Natale.

Auch Hitzigs ältere Tochter Eugenie kommt als ältere Schwester Luise im Märchen vor. Auf einer späteren Bearbeitung dieses Stoffes durch Alexandre Dumas d. Hans-Jürgen Schatz verbindet Szenen aus der weltberühmten Geschichte von E.T.A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) mit Auszügen aus Peter I. Tschaikowskys "Nussknacker"-Ballettmusik, darunter die Zuckerfee, der spanische Tanz und der Blumenwalzer, mit denen Albert Lau vom Flügel aus das Märchen erzählerisch mitgestaltet.

Am Weihnachtsabend bekommt die kleine Marie einen Nussknacker geschenkt. Sie schließt ihn sofort ins Herz und eilt ihm zur Hilfe, als er einen dramatischen Kampf gegen den gemeinen Mausekönig ausfechten muss. Mit Mut, Herz und Liebe wird der Mausekönig besiegt und der Nussknacker nimmt Marie mit auf eine wunderbare Reise ins Feenland, wo die Fantasie regiert.

An Weihnachten entdeckt die kleine Marie einen Nussknacker bei den Geschenken. Sie nimmt ihn zu sich. In der Nacht wird der Nussknacker lebendig. Er führt eine Schlacht gegen ein Mäuseheer und den Mäusekönig. Marie wird verletzt.
