Hoffmann, among the greatest and most popular of the German Romantics, is renowned for his humorous and sometimes horrifying tales of supernatural beings. This selection, while stressing the variety of his work, focuses on those stories in which the real and the supernatural are brought into contact and conflict. The Sand-Man (German: Der Sandmann, 1816) is a short story written in German by E. T. A. Hoffmann. It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled Die Nachtstücke (The Night Pieces). The story is told by a narrator who claims to have known Lothar. It begins by quoting three letters.

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann (1776-1822), noto con lo pseudonimo di E. T. A. Hoffmann, fu il primo scrittore a mettere su carta la storia dello schiaccianoci, oggetto molto in voga nell’Ottocento e che faceva bella mostra di sé nei mercatini di Natale di tutta la Germania.Il racconto dell’autore tedesco (che fu inoltre pittore, compositore e giurista) venne pubblicato nel 1816 e ispirò anche la versione di Alexandre Dumas, dalla quale Tchaïkovski trarrà uno dei balletti più famosi di tutti i tempi.I piccoli protagonisti della favola sono Marie e Fritz, due bambini in trepidante attesa dei doni di Natale.

Ä. basiert Tschaikowskis weltberühmtes Ballett "Der Nussknacker". Marie, Tochter des Medizinalrats Stahlbaum, entdeckt am Weihnachtsabend auf dem Gabentisch einen Nussknacker.

Endlich Weihnachten! Im Hause Stahlbaum ist Bescherung: Fritz freut sich über eine Armee Zinnsoldaten, während es für Marie nichts Schöneres gibt als den wehmütig dreinblickenden Nussknacker...

Während sich die Eltern um ihre Tochter sorgen, was sie denn nachts heimlich mache, erzählt der Pate Obergerichtsrat Droßelmeier Marie ein Märchen, das auf das Schicksal ihres Nussknackers übertragbar ist. Voller Entschlossenheit, den Nussknacker vor dem Mausekönig zu retten, geht Marie bis an ihre kindlichen Grenzen...

E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror as well as a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories were highly influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement. This audiobook includes three short stories: 'The Mines of Falun', 'Gambler's Luck' and 'The Cremona Violin'.
