Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, known as Colette, was a French author and woman of letters. She was also a mime, actress, and journalist. Colette is best known in the English-speaking world for her 1944 novella Gigi, which was the basis for the 1958 film and the 1973 stage production of the same name. Gigi became a celebrated stage musical and film; the stage production made a star of Audrey Hepburn, who was personally chosen by Colette for the role, and a dramatized adaptation is the centrepiece of this collection.

Largely autobiographical, La Vagabonde recalls Colette's own years as a dance hall performer in turn of the century Paris, where she takes the listener backstage and into the demimonde of Renée Néré, an aging dancer, mime, and failed writer. Colette (1873-1954) is one of the most widely read and critically acclaimed French writers of the twentieth century. The Cat first serialised then published in volume form in 1933) is one of her short novels. This story of a middle-class couple in 1920s Paris follows the familiar romantic structure of the 'eternal triangle', with the unexpected twist that the female rival is not a woman but a cat. The novel displays her capacity to conjure up a vibrantly physical world and a particular social moment, her radical yet nuanced view of gender roles, and her empathy with non-human creatures.

"Sido" et "Les Vrilles de la vigne" sont deux textes distincts de l’œuvre de Colette, tous deux d’inspiration autobiographique. Dans "Sido" (1930), Colette évoque le souvenir de sa mère tant aimée, puis son père, l’amour qui unissait ses parents et raconte son enfance heureuse au sein d’une campagne bourguignonne idyllique. Cette éducation harmonieuse a profondément marqué sa manière de vivre. Sous le personnage de l’écrivaine parisienne affleure la jeune fille qui apprit à vivre au rythme des saisons et à goûter la sensualité de la vie.

Ma mère et les bêtes, écrite en 1922, est l'une des nouvelles de La maison de Claudine. En 1947, Colette en fait une lecture, et c'est par cet enregistrement que commence le livre audio. Sa voix porte les couleurs de sa terre, aux "r" voluptueusement roulés. Les nouvelles du recueil racontent le temps où, petite fille, elle goûtait "la condition d'être une enfant de son village et d'avoir une mère au rire aigu de jeune fille".
