  • The Four Pillars
    Oct 31 2024

What are the four pillars of NVC?

    1. Observations
    2. Emotions
    3. The Need
    4. State Your Request (CTA)

These pillars, which will be discussed further in this minisode, are pivotal in your way of communication, like a giraffe.

What is a giraffe in terms of NVC?

Giraffes possess some of the biggest hearts among all animals, with dimensions reaching up to 60 cm and weighing around 10 kg.

Within the framework of Nonviolent Communication, the giraffe represents a desire to communicate and listen with kindness and empathy — truly embodying a large heart!

Moreover, these creatures feed on foliage from trees with sharp thorns (like acacia trees), thanks to their resilient lips and flexible tongues enable them to maneuver around the thorns skillfully.

Symbolically, this gives giraffes the ability to handle difficult discussions deftly!

  • The Power in Empathy
    Oct 31 2024

How do we bring power in empathy?

Empathy is a skill that embraces all people and perspectives. Can you imagine being in a meeting with someone who can empathize with you? The empathetic listener activates the cingulate cortex in our brain. What does empathy not mean?

It does mean shouldering someone's luggage. It means putting yourself in their shoes and using words like, " I understand," "I can see that you are upset," and "Your feelings are valid." It allows someone to feel heard.

When empathy fails, stop, pause, and listen to yourself. Catching yourself not empathetic is okay. You always have the time to recalibrate.
