Sisters in Stoke

By: Meghann Birks
  • Summary

  • A love letter to the "too much" crew, Sisters in Stoke is a podcast for women and those who identify as women to share stories of how they found their stoke, inspiring others to pursue their passion and purpose. My guests have truly embraced the spirit of "Let's f**k around and find out!" when it comes to going all in on creating a life they love. Now they own the narrative and share their stories as they are...real, raw and vulnerable, talking about the obstacles they've overcome, what keeps them going when times are tough and just how good it feels to live a BIG, juicy, messy life.

  • S2: E6- Lola Broomhall: Stoked on Life Beneath the Waves
    Sep 24 2024

If you were a little kid like me who dreamed of being a mermaid, then this episode is for you because today's guest is...you guessed it...an ACTUAL mermaid.

Lola Broomhall is a mermaid and free diver based on the Mornington Peninsula. When she's working you might see her practicing as a physiotherapist, breath worker or yoga and Pilates instructor, or running a wellbeing workshop. Outside of working she can seen frolicking on the back beaches or enjoying a coffee with friends. She is passionate about health, living in a holistic and balanced way, and in particular about connecting to and supporting the many wonderful and talented women in our community.

You'll find her at art exhibitions and poetry nights , ecstatic dance parties and cafes enjoying all the random pleasures life on the peninsula has to offer!

We talk about the power of choice, chasing your dreams, how she got into mermaiding and how you can too, her love of the ocean, breathwork, freediving, pushing your boundaries, dealing with fear, finding your people, and caring less about what others think.

Whether you’re a wanna be merperson or a committed landlubber, this episode asks (and kind of answers) some pretty big questions. It’s sure to get you thinking about what really lights you up and inspire you to take more chances so take a breath and dive in!

  • S2: E4- Mel Browne: Stoked on Unf*cking Our Finances and Creating Freedom
    May 20 2024

Today’s guest is on a mission to empower women to shift how they think about money and create freedom and choice.

Melissa Browne is the bestselling author of Unf*ck Your Finances, a socially awkward introvert who loves fashion, reading and puzzles. She also happens to be an ex-financial advisor and ex-accountant who went from having less than nothing in her 30s to becoming a multi-millionaire and having financial independence in her 40s.

This experience means Mel has the theory as a financial expert of more than 20 years but also the life experience. She deeply understands the shame that comes from not being at the age and stage you thought you should be and knows you can come back from that place to where you can have financial independence and choice. Because she did that herself and has helped thousands of women over the years achieve that too.

Today, Mel’s mission is to help women work towards choice through financial empowerment. The main way Mel does that is through her signature 8 week course, the My Financial Adulting Plan which has had more than 3,000 people through its doors in the last 3 years. She also works with corporates to create practical, sustainable financial well being strategies in their workplaces.

Mel wrote a fortnightly column for the Money Section in the Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne’s The Age for seven years as well as being a regular contributor for CEO Magazine, Yahoo Finance and other publications. She makes regular TV and radio appearances including Triple J’s The Hack, the Today Show, Weekend Sunrise, Weekend Today, Sky Business and The Daily Edition. She has also been featured in or written articles for Cosmopolitan, Who, Vogue, Elle, The Collective, Harpers Bazaar, Rendezvous, Madison and more.

We talk about why finance is a feminist issue, the current crisis of violence against women and its connection to socio-economic disparities, dealing with money shame, uncovering your money story and why it’s critical, becoming financially literate (it’s a skill and you can learn!), money tips for ADHDers, working through overwhelm, finding support on your money journey, becoming a financial adult and more.

Mel has been a huge influence in my own money journey and this episode is full of insights, tips and questions to get you thinking about how your money can work for you and help you create a life you love. No matter where you are on your financial journey, it’s never too late to get started so grab a pen and notebook and dive in!

Mel has generously created a page for listeners of this episode where you can find free tools and resources to help you get started, as well as more information about how to work with her. Check it out here.
