• Learning to Cope: The Role of School in the Lives of Children of Alcoholics
    May 10 2023
Welcome to Recovery Talk! Welcome to the final episode of my first season! Today, me and Shaun, a college tutor in England, explore the topic of how school has served as an escape for children of alcoholics and how support for them has changed over the years. For many children of alcoholics, school provided a sanctuary from the chaos of their home life. The structure and routine of the school day offered stability, and the opportunity to excel academically offered a sense of control and self-worth. Over the years, awareness and understanding of the impact of parental alcoholism on children has increased. Schools have implemented programs and support systems to help these children cope, including conseling services, support groups, and education on coping mechanisms. Additionally, community organisations and government agencies have developed resources to help children of alcoholics and their families. As I conclude our first season, I hope that this episode has shed light on the experiences of children of alcoholics and the role that school has played in their lives. I also hope that it has highlighted the progress that has been made in supporting these children and the work that still needs to be done. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and we I look forward to continuing the conversation in my next season.
