• Roots & Wings: Part 90s grunge. Part pole dancer
    Oct 18 2022

“You’re not alone in your struggles,” Denise says when speaking candidly about starting this podcast. “We aren’t perfect,” Jenna says. The girls discuss living away from where they grew up—the highs and lows. Denise shares her journey of leaving Alberta, Canada for New Orleans, Louisiana. “I’ve moved many times, but you are doing something I’ve never done—moving to a new country without a visa. That’s brave!” Jenna squirrels into her stylist giving her a 90s grunge look and the opposite, faux leather leggings which she says looks pole dancer. Denise laughs and talks about how she loves the neon colors from the 80s and the New Orleans vibe. This episode is full of moments of overcoming fear and aligning with ones true self.

  • Judgment: Do you want the couch or not, Tim?
    Oct 11 2022

Jenna talks about her women’s group sharing their stories—boys, alcohol problems, turning their back on God, parenting fails. It’s surprising to find out about people because you already have a preconceived judgement. “I come from a culture of gossipy, judgmental people. I have to think compassion, have gratitude,” Jenna admits. Denise says, “My filter is very short-lived. Most people don’t like that. I try my best. I do it a lot in my head. And I tell myself you’ve been through it. You know how hard change is. Keep your mouth shut.” The girls discuss knowing your place and often correcting others isn’t appreciated.

  • Love Languages: You look like a clown
    Oct 4 2022

Denise discusses The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. She doesn’t agree or disagree with it, but wanted to discuss if they were valid. Jenna did some reflecting after Denise suggested she take a test to find her love languages. “It was clear I had been in relationships and friendships where we had different ways of receiving love. I use to date this guy in my early 20s that sent me gifts all the time. It’s not one of my love languages. I never appreciated it.” Denise feels people have certain love languages because that’s how they want to be loved or how they were raised. Jenna shares a professional contact asked her about love languages over the summer, which she found weird. “Letting people in close to me is hard because of issues with my ex-husband. Ask my friends how long it took to get close to me.” The girls talk inner-circle and how everyone communicates. “Get to the point. Put up or shut up. Don’t tell me you’re in your head. I’m going to ask you what the problem is. I don’t want to overcomplicate life.” The girls discuss how difficult relationships can be. “I never realized how complicated relationships are until we started this podcast.”

  • Relationships: Don’t feed the alligators
    Sep 27 2022

“Hi, my name is Denise, and I’m a statistic.”

The most requested topic is relationships. The girls dive into statistics—38% of adults are not married or living with someone. “People are getting pets instead of people,” Denise jokes. “The dating world has changed in the last twenty years. A lot of my friends are now divorced and middle-aged. They have no idea what to do.” Jenna discusses how the exceptions of women has changed as well. “My degree was secondary to finding a husband.” Denise admits that she felt safer leaving her family’s home married than single. “We are the generation stuck between two different worlds—get married, but also get educated and have a career. Somehow women are supposed to do it all. That’s the expectation, and it’s damn near impossible.” Denise talks about how she believes men are confused. “They don’t know what to do because so much has changed. Things have shifted and no one told them.” Jenna agrees and adds, “Things have shifted. We created all these boss babes—what do we do? We are out working corporate jobs. I can’t clean your home—sorry.” The girls discuss intentions, people wasting time, and much more.

  • Accountability: Bush eating goat
    Sep 20 2022

“It’s your fault,” Jenna says. “Not your parents. Not your boss. Not your partner. Things change when you can take responsibility for your choices.” Denise talks priorities and consistency, “I have time. I’m ready. Let’s do something! If I don’t have a to-do list or schedule, I won’t know what to do.” Jenna jokes about Denise being an instant gratification girl. “You want it all, and you want it now.” Denise laughs because it’s true. “I pull you out of the planning. You give me direction. It’s a great balance. We both go overboard on the opposite extremes.” The girls discuss not wanting to do the things they love, willpower, starting a podcast and business, and much more.

  • Forgiveness: It was Judy’s fault. Not mine
    Sep 13 2022

“It’s a tough thing to do. Forgiving myself was the hardest thing. It required me to be accountable. Accepting my part in the abuse (from my marriage). He did what he did. It wasn’t my fault he did it, but it was my fault I stayed so long. It’s not really a fault thing, that sounds harsh, but I could have made different decisions. It is what it is. It took me awhile to realize I needed to forgive myself.” Denise opens the episode talking about her divorce. Jenna talks about her expectations of other people. “I recognize that’s my boundary. If you’re going to constantly disappoint me. I forgive you. I release you. But I don’t want this in my life.” The girls discuss building up scenarios in your mind. “Write down the facts. Give me examples,” Jenna says. “You will find out you’ve created a bunch of crap in your mind.” Denise talks about a relationship where it was like trying to squish a square peg into a round hole. Lots of unapologetic conversation about boundaries, relationships, and the journey to a more peaceful life.

  • Help: Don’t pray for my trainwreck
    Sep 6 2022

Jenna opens the episode sharing the times she had been in counseling. When her father had cancer, the elementary school put her in counseling without telling her parents. Denise opens up about her father dying from cancer too. The girls discuss relationships, divorce, and friendships. “I do pray for people, but sometimes you need more than prayers,” Jenna says. “I feel like it’s a cop out,” Denise says. Priorities, boundaries, the messiness of parenthood, and how words matter are discussed. “Should and sometimes are bad words.”
