Midlife Cry, Sis (Formerly known as The Bettys Podcast)

By: marynolancox
  • Summary

  • Welcome to the Midlife Cry, Sis podcast! We are Alexis and Mary, and we want to help you: to feel loved and accepted in your home and community, to not feel alone in your emotional struggles, to embrace who you really are, to let go of expectations, and to channel your inner Queen and LET HER SHINE. Our mission is to help women (and those who love them) to find light in dark places, to empower them with confidence in God and in themselves, and to appreciate their own journeys through life and faith. These podcasts are wide-ranging conversations about love, family, and embracing our pasts while envisioning a future where we’re not afraid to light it up, rise above, and get through this crazy thing called midlife. Are you ready for a good laugh and/or cry? You’re in the right place, Queen.

  • 138 - Frida, Bruce, and Big Magic
    Jul 8 2024

Hello, Queens. This is a bit of a different episode–Mary is flying solo today. She ties together a few things: artist Frida Kahlo, musician Bruce Springsteen, and the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, which she has been talking about for several weeks now. You can find links to all of the books we have recommended on the podcast here on Amazon.

Mary goes quickly through the sections of the book, and describes how both Kahlo and Springsteen used these concepts in their creative careers. As promised, here’s a link to Mary’s Bruce Springsteen playlist on Spotify.

  • 137 - Emotional Immaturity
    Jul 1 2024

Hello, Queens! We start today’s episode with a Mama Ximena tip of the day/pearl of wisdom: “Be patient with yourself. Wait until the water is clear–then you can think. Don’t try to think in a whirlwind.” Or a whirlpool. How’s Feral February going for you? Lexy is dejunking, to help make her psyche as strong and brilliant as possible. And Mary will never pass up a chance to plug Gretchen Rubin, who says that outer order leads to inner calm. Read her manifesto here, and check out her book Outer Order, Inner Calm here. (And here’s a link to our ever-expanding Amazon book recommendations!)

Mary has been thinking about how the concept of “Fight, Flight, or Freeze’ can apply to many different situations–from housekeeping to emotional immaturity. She mentions again the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, particularly the two-part series on emotional immaturity (episodes 263 and 264) with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Lindsay C. Gibson. Listen here on Apple or here on Spotify.

We refer to the “Islands of Intelligence” theory (read more about it here and here), and how different people can be geniuses at different things. But as the saying goes: "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" (often attributed to Einstein, but nobody is really sure. See this USA Today article written about it).

Here’s the link the article from Om Swami called Four Kinds of Maturity. And here’s the link to the article from verywellhealth.com about Emotional Immaturity.
