137 - Emotional Immaturity

  • Summary

  • Hello, Queens! We start today’s episode with a Mama Ximena tip of the day/pearl of wisdom: “Be patient with yourself. Wait until the water is clear–then you can think. Don’t try to think in a whirlwind.” Or a whirlpool. How’s Feral February going for you? Lexy is dejunking, to help make her psyche as strong and brilliant as possible. And Mary will never pass up a chance to plug Gretchen Rubin, who says that outer order leads to inner calm. Read her manifesto here, and check out her book Outer Order, Inner Calm here. (And here’s a link to our ever-expanding Amazon book recommendations!)

Mary has been thinking about how the concept of “Fight, Flight, or Freeze’ can apply to many different situations–from housekeeping to emotional immaturity. She mentions again the We Can Do Hard Things podcast, particularly the two-part series on emotional immaturity (episodes 263 and 264) with Clinical Psychologist Dr. Lindsay C. Gibson. Listen here on Apple or here on Spotify.

We refer to the “Islands of Intelligence” theory (read more about it here and here), and how different people can be geniuses at different things. But as the saying goes: "Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" (often attributed to Einstein, but nobody is really sure. See this USA Today article written about it).
