  • Summary

  • I ask musicians about where they've been, where they're going, and how they feel about the rise of illegal downloading and legal streaming services, in a world where people tend to view the music as disposable.

  • Episode 72: Ryan Shuck (Adema, Julien-K, ex-Orgy, ex-Dead by Sunrise) 8-9-2022
    Aug 12 2022
I sit down on Skype and talk to Ryan Shuck of the bands Adema and Julien-K, and formerly of Orgy and Dead by Sunrise. We discuss Ryan's start in music in the band Sexart with Jonathan Davis from Korn, how that friendship led to Orgy signing with Korn's label Elementree Records, why the original lineup of Orgy disbanded, and whether there is a possibility of ever reuniting. We also cover how issues at the end of the original lineup of Orgy led to the formation of Julien-K, how Ryan's friendship with Chester Bennington led to the collaboration between Julien-K and Chester called Dead by Sunrise, and how the creative process for Julien-K compared to that of Orgy. On the Adema front we discuss the band's tumultuous relationship with original singer Marky Chavez, why some of the band's later material is not available to stream on Spotify, how Ryan became the band's latest singer, and what their plans are for the future. And of course, we discuss Ryan's thoughts on the current state of the music industry. Podcast intro "Rock Intro 3" courtesy of audionautix.com. "Desperation Day" is the latest single by Julien-K featuring The Anix, and "Violent Principles" is the latest single by Adema. Both songs were included with the permission of Ryan Shuck.

  • Episode 62: Kill Devil Hill (Mark Zavon, Matt Snell, Mike Dupke) 7-11-2021
    Jul 14 2021
Before the band's show at Dingbatz in Clifton, NJ, I sit down with guitarist Mark Zavon, bassist Matt Snell, and fill-in drummer Mike Dupke of Kill Devil Hill. We discuss the band's formation and where their name came from, the departures of founding member Vinny Appice (ex-Black Sabbath) and bassist Rex Brown (ex-Pantera), and whether fans accept the band as its own thing or try to compare it to its members' former projects. Mark replies to Vinny's recent remark that he left the band because people were never on time, we discuss the band's plans for their next album, and of course we discuss the band's thoughts on the current state of the music industry. Podcast intro "Rock Intro 3" courtesy of audionautix.com. "War Machine" appears on Kill Devil Hill's self-titled album and "Leave It All Behind" appears on their album Revolution Rise. Both songs were included with the permission of Mark Zavon.

  • Episode 58: Donald Carpenter (Blisskrieg, ex-Apollo Under Fire, ex-Eye Empire, ex-Submersed
    Mar 25 2021
I sit down on Skype (while drinking beer from Ghost Hawk Brewing Co, of course) and talk to Donald Carpenter, vocalist of the band Blisskrieg, and formerly of Submersed, Eye Empire, and Apollo Under Fire. We discuss his journey in each band including how they formed, and in the case of his former bands, why they broke up. We also discuss why he has taken a more melodic vocal approach in Blisskrieg than he did in Eye Empire, and whether or not he would still write and sing a heavier vocal. And of course, I ask him his thoughts on the current state of the music industry. Podcast intro "Rock Intro 3" courtesy of audionautix.com. Photo taken by Shaun Carswell. "Inside Me" and “Waiting” appear on Blisskrieg’s debut album Remedy. Both songs were included with the permission of Donald Carpenter.
