  • Staying Active with Cheryl Hile
    Oct 11 2022

In this episode, Andy sat down with Cheryl Hile. Cheryl is a has been running marathons since 2000, but in 2006 her life was changed when a nagging injury turned out to be MS. Due to physical challenges, Cheryl struggled with keeping her exercise goals alive, but she persisted and was fitted for a brace called an ankle-foot orthosis which helped her run without the fear of falling. As a result, since her diagnosis, she has completed over 60 marathons and became the first person with MS to run eight marathons on eight continents, completing them all in only 12 months!

In 2018, Cheryl founded “Run A Myelin My Shoes,” an MS support team that has now grown to over 300 teammates worldwide representing 19 countries. She founded this organization to dispel the often-misconceived notion that strenuous exercise is bad for MS, so her mission now is to encourage people with MS to keep pushing forward to the best of their abilities so they can remain active despite a disease that compromises mobility.

This weekend, on October 15, Cheryl and her Run A Myelin My Shoes team are participating in the Baltimore Marathon, and in this episode she shares how you can take part to support the cause. Check out this episode of It’s the Climb to hear the whole story.

  • Pouring into the Root with Griff Aldrich
    Jul 6 2022

In this episode, Andy and Jonas sat down with Griff Aldrich.

Griff is a college basketball coach, currently serving as the head coach of the Longwood Lancers in Virginia. In his first four years of leadership he has lead the team to their first ever Division I NCAA Tournament appearance, a Big South Championship, and a Big South regular season title. As a result of Griff’s influence, the Lancers have become one of the most drastic turnarounds in all of college basketball.

But perhaps what’s most impressive is these accomplishments came after a 16 year gap in his college basketball coaching career, during which time he forged a name for himself as a partner with the Vinson & Elkins law firm, as the founder of a major oil and gas company, and as a managing director and chief financial officer for a private investment firm.

Yet even while engaging in these business ventures, coaching has remained a passion, and over the years he continued to coach elite-level AAU high school basketball players, going on to found the HIS Hoops program in one of the most impoverished areas of Houston, where he poured into their roots the fundamentals of faith, academics, and basketball. As a result of Griff’s efforts, his players have gone on to play for elite college and professional teams both nationally and internationally.

Griff’s example is powerful testament of what is possible when you engage in the fundamentals of great execution, consistently pouring into the roots of worthy effort, attitude, and focus.

  • Getting Out There with Susan Simmons
    Jun 20 2022

In this episode, Andy sat down with Susan Simmons.

Susan is a Canadian marathon swimmer living with MS, Multiple Sclerosis—a chronic and progressive autoimmune disease that impacts the brain’s nerve cells and spinal cord, leading to symptoms such as uncontrolled spasms, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, pain, and impaired vision, balance, and coordination, just to name a few.

Susan was diagnosed in 1995 at the age of 30 and was told to avoid exercise because doctors feared it would put her at risk of permanent nerve damage. But after ten years of rest, her condition only worsened and it became clear that if she did not do something, she would soon be in a wheelchair.

And so, in 2005, Susan shifted her focus to fitness as her final hope of managing the disease, but because MS is often a heat sensitive disease—with exercise causing attacks as the body’s temperature rises—she turned to swimming as a low-impact form of exercise that would also keep her cool.

After training for seven years, she competed in her first 10km ocean swim in Vancouver, a swim of over six miles, placing first in her division, and she has since gone on to complete in a number of open-water marathons swims—including an over 43-mile unassisted swim, which she completed in just over 31 hours!

Susan’s accomplishments are incredible, but what makes them even more remarkable is knowing what she has had to overcome in order to achieve them. She is truly an inspiration to everyone, demonstrating what’s possible when you just get out there and do it.
