Wise Man’s Restraint (Daily Devotional)

  • Summary

  • Shalom, it’s a joy to join you once again, as we look into God’s word on how to deal with anger. In your anger, what do you do? How do we deal with anger? We look at some of the instructions that God gives us in scripture. Yesterday, we looked at not being hasty because when we are hasty, we are acting foolish. Today, we are going to look a little more in detail about what a wise man’s restraint is. Today’s scripture, Proverbs chapter 29, verse 11 reads, ‘A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.’ This verse provides a stark contrast between a wise person and a fool. This verse contrasts the importance of self-control and the detrimental effects of uncontrolled anger. It describes the one who vents his anger and he is called as a fool. So, giving fulling vent to one’s anger means they require an immediate release and that in itself can be foolish. A fool is someone who impulsively reacts to anger, letting it pour out without any filter and this behavior often causes a lot of harm. Another thing that a fool does would be that this uncontrolled release often escalates conflicts and it creates an environment of hostility and tension and a fool also has a lack of discernment. They are driven by emotions and do not give a thoughtful consideration of what could be the possible consequences. But look at the contrast of a wise person, he exercises self-control, choosing to manage their emotions and responses and this discipline reflects a maturity, a state of deep understanding of the impact of what their emotions can do for the other person. A wise person, instead of reacting impulsively considers the situation and chooses what to say, how to react carefully thus bringing about peace. By keeping their anger in check, they set a positive example for others. It fosters a loving and respectful interaction. By choosing to manage our anger wisely, we are really showing forth God’s wisdom, who God is. Let us strive to be wise in our responses, keeping our emotions in check and allowing the Lord to guide our actions so that we can be like the wise man who restrains his anger. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you that you have taught us this contrast of a wise and a foolish man. We pray that we will take the wisdom, we will stand in patience even as we deal with our situations. Help us to restrain ourselves when we may want to act foolishly. We pray you will give us the wisdom to be wise, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
