  • Righteousness Through Patience (Daily Devotional)
    Jan 21 2025
Shalom, it’s lovely to be here once again to share God’s word together and meditate on it. Through this week, we have been looking at nuggets of verses in the bible about how we can deal with our anger, what do you do in your anger? Today’s verse is taken from James chapter 1, verse 20, ‘for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.’ James chapter 1, verse 20 is reminding us that human anger doesn’t produce the righteousness that God wants to see in our lives. We see that righteousness is through patience. In other words, anger is not a legitimate way to promote God’s righteous purpose. If we are ill tempered or our anger is selfish, it doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. What does God’s righteousness involve? It involves living in a way that is pleasing to God, that is characterized by love and peace. When we allow our anger to control us, our actions and words often stray away from what God desires of us. Anger can often cloud our judgment and we sometimes don’t understand and know what we are doing and often we make decisions that we could regret later. As we saw, it damages relationships and it creates great barriers between people. So, how can we pursue patience? Patience is a virtue that counters anger. When we practice patience, we are allowing ourselves time to cool down, to reflect and then to respond in a way that honors God. Patience helps us align our actions with God’s righteousness rather than reacting impulsively. To produce the righteousness that God desires, we must strive to respond to anger in a way that aligns with the character of God. This involves patience, self-control and seeking peace. Instead of reacting in anger, we seek to understand and address whatever the root cause is of those emotions maybe. So, this verse reminds us to cautious with our anger; instead of letting it control us, we should seek to respond in a way that aligns with God’s righteousness through patience, understanding and forgiveness. When we do so, we reflet the righteousness that comes from God. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, in each of our situations, may we reflect your righteousness. May we be led to times of patience and kindness and peace. Give us the grace to do that in each one of our situations. We desire to honor you and follow you and the path of righteousness even in tense or difficult situations. Do hear our prayer, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen. • Slow To Anger (Daily Devotional)
    Jan 20 2025
Shalom, it’s a joy to bring God’s word to you once again. Through this week, we have been looking at how we can handle anger by looking into God’s word. The verse for today in James chapter 1, verse 19 reads, ‘Let every an be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.’ This verse gives a wise counsel and a road map for how to manage our reactions that often can lead to anger. God’s word is always the best way and when we follow it, we are always blessed. What can we learn from today’s verse? There are two instructions that James gives us in this verse. It says, let every man be quick to hear and slow to speak and these are two instructions that will lead to a delayed anger. Being quick to hear or listen, it means that we are patient to hear in completion the other person’s side of the story. When we listen, we are acting in love and in respect. When we listen, we show others that their feelings and words really matter. It allows us to understand their perspective and helps us to respond with empathy. Maybe it is good for us to reflect on how we actually listen to others. Are we truly hearing them or are we preparing what we need to say next? So, this can be a way we can keep from becoming prematurely angry. The next thing that James says is slow to speak. Slow to speak is the opposite of quick to hear. We control what we speak and not saying anything and everything that may come to our minds. Our words have immense power, it can bless, it can bring life, it can encourage, there are so many things that our words can do and conversely, it can also do a lot of negative things. But being slow to speak is taking the time to think before we respond. It is choosing our words carefully and responding in a way that ensures and reflects the love and the patience of God. Let’s consider the impact of our words before we speak especially when we are angry or frustrated. The way we respond in frustrating situations really speaks a lot about how we showcase/ reflect God. James shares this wisdom so that we can honor God even in times of difficulty or when situations are tense. So, let’s learn to keep these instructions of how we can delay our anger. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, we thank you for these instructions. Give us ears to listen and a mouth that sparingly speaks. Help us to use wisdom and restraint. We pray for your help in every situation that may lead us to conflict or frustration. Teach us how to deal with our anger, in Jesus’ name, Amen. • Let Go (Daily Devotional)
    Jan 19 2025
Shalom, we are happy to join you here once again as we look into God’s word. We started a series on looking at what do we do in our anger, what are the lessons we can learn from scripture? Scripture brings a lot of teaching on anger and one of the things that we are going to focus on today is to let go or to cease from anger. Psalm chapter 37, verse 8, ‘Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret—it only causes harm.’ The verse today emphasizes that when we allow anger and wrath to fester, it only causes harm. In other words, unchecked anger can lead to evil, fretting leads to evil. This is a reminder that an unchecked anger can disrupt our peace and lead us away from the righteous path that God intends for us. What does the verse emphasize? It says, cease from anger. In other words, it means let it go or let alone to slacken, weaken your anger. It simply means to let go. It means to make a conscious decision to stop continuing to allow that anger to stay in. This could involve letting go of the negative emotions that come as a result such as bitterness, resentment or even a desire for revenge. It is an intentional act of moving from those feelings. The verse also says to forsake wrath. Wrath is intense anger and it is often something that seeks revenge or seeks punishment, something as a payback. Turning away from wrath means rejecting these extreme reactions. Instead of allowing anger to escalate into wrath, we step back and respond with patience and understanding. The third thing it says is fretting. What does fretting involve? Excessive worrying and stewing over a situation that really builds upon and causes that anger. This verse tells us not to allow or dwell on the matter or allow it to consume our thoughts. Fretting generally intensifies anger and leads to a lot of negative outcomes. When we hold on to anger, it clouds our judgement on what we should do. So, ceasing from anger, forsaking wrath and not fretting involves trusting in the justice and in the timing of God. Instead of taking matters into our own hands or to seek revenge, we trust that God will handle the situation in His perfect wisdom and in His true righteousness. This trust allows us to let go of that anger and find our peace. By letting go, we are trusting God and as a result, we respond with grace and patience. Let’s pray together, Heavenly Father, teach us to let go, to forsake our wrath and to give up on fretting because we know that all justice and all righteousness is yours. Help us to truly depend on you even with these emotions and take on what you desire for us. May we be patient, kind and willing to pause. Thank you for being with us, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
