  • 032 - GUEST SERIES: Drs. Melillo and Scire (Part 3): Immunoception - the Brain's Role in Monitoring and Managing Immunology
    Nov 19 2024

    Send us a text

In part 3 of my ongoing conversations with Drs. Melillo and Scire we dive deep into Immunoception and how the brain monitors and manages the immune system. It should come as no surprise that if the brain controls movement, cognition, emotion, visceral and hormone functions, it should influence the immune system too. Yet as a community, we hardly ever think of the brain's role in recurrent infections, Loss of Tolerance and autoimmunity.

We all leave our basic education with just a shadow of understanding of how critical the brain is to our Client's health and wellness. It is incumbent on us as clinician's to learn the brain - because most of us never have - and a true Functional Medicine approach without a component of brain may not be Functional Medicine at all.

  • 031 | The Power of Xylitol and Being Sued by the FTC for "misleading information" - A conversation with Nate Jones (founder of Xlear Inc.)
    Oct 15 2024

Nate Jones is the founder and president of Xlear Inc, producers of Xlear nasal spray used to manage sinus and ear infections. But recently, the Federal Trade Commission advised Nate that his company was being sued for misleading information regarding their products, a charge he vehemently denies.

Join the conversation as I ask Nate about the court case and the dangerous precedent this would set for supplement manufacturers and natural medicine practitioners. Of course, we talk about the science behind, and clinical efficacy of, xylitol and Xlear products.

  • 030 | GUEST SERIES: Dr. Rob Melillo and Dr. Peter Scire (Part 2) - Finding and Fixing Brain Imbalances in Adults and Children
    Oct 8 2024

    Send us a text

In Part 2 of my conversation with developmental experts Drs. Rob Melillo and Peter Scire we delve into how brain asymmetries develop and how they can create not only kids on the "spectrum" but adults with tendencies to anxiety, depression and OCD.

We discuss Interoception and the Insular Cortex and its role in controlling immune over activation, autonomic responses and highlight how all of the Vagal activation therapies common to Func Med are really using the Vagal system to access the Insular Cortex.

Stay tuned for a 3rd episode where we go deep into Immunoception and how important it is for Func Med practitioners to understand the brain balance of clients with autoimmune and neuro-endocrine-immune dysfunctions.

  • 028 | GUEST SERIES: Accurate and Reliable Gene testing for cancer and CVD risk. An interview with Dahlia Attia-King (Founder and CEO of Panacea)
    Sep 12 2024

    Send us a text

Dahlia is the Founder and CEO of Panacea and has a BS in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Miami. Dahlia’s experience working for genetic laboratories exposed her to the reality that very few patients were able to access valuable preventative genetic tests. She learned quickly that the lack of insurance coverage for genetic testing and thus physician hesitancy to order testing were the most inhibitory barriers.

With an additional 6 years in Healthcare Tech, Dahlia learned about the innovative solutions that could push healthcare into a much needed era of modernization. After embarking on a multi-year journey to further unravel the complex reasons for genetic testing underutilization, she met Dr. Hinco Gierman and they were inspired to create a solution.

Panacea was founded with a mission to reduce barriers to access for clinical genetic testing so that people can get in control of their health and prevent disease. Panacea now offers residents of almost every state the ability to receive at-home clinical genetic testing called Whole Exome Sequencing and expert medical guidance in just a few clicks, empowering people to potentially save their own lives.

  • 026 | Immunoception (Part 1): How the Brain Monitors and Modulates the Immune System - with special guest Dr. Peter Scire
    Jun 18 2024

    Send us a text

Immunoception is a relatively new concept that falls under the broader heading of Interoception, which is the Brain's understanding of the peripheral body. Immunoception refers to the bidirectional crosstalk between the brain and the immunity, with specific focus on how the brain imprints, or remembers, patterns of immune activation. This has tremendous clinical relevance in complex Functional Medicine cases where pattern of chronic stress chemistry and inflammation do not respond well to typical Func Med applications.

My special guest is Dr. Peter Scire, who is the owner and Clinical Director of Scire Integrative Health Center/Scire Functional Neurology center, and Co-Owner of Brain Balance Centers of Atlanta.

As a child, Dr. Scire was diagnosed with a learning disability and Dyslexia but went from a struggling student to graduating at the top of his high school class and an award-winning collegiate scholar with the help of Chiropractic and nutritional therapies. Overcoming his personal struggles made him realize that helping people was his calling, and so made this his vocation.

While in graduate school he took a special interest in Functional Neurology, which led him to study under Dr. Robert Melillo who developed protocols for children suffering from ADHD, Dyslexia, Learning Disorders, Tourette’s, and Autism Spectrum Disorders. This collaboration led to Dr. Scire establishing the first three Brain Balance Centers in 2007-2008.

Since 2010, Dr. Scire has been a co-instructor with Dr. Melillo in his Functional Developmental Behavioral Neuroimmunology courses, where he covers in-depth neuroimmunology concepts as it relates to the development of the brain, and how to address immunological dysfunctions in complex cases.

Dr. Scire has completed post-graduate studies in the areas of Traumatic Brain Injury/Concussion Rehabilitation, Vestibular Rehabilitation, Neuroimmunology, Low Level Laser Therapy, Functional Endocrinology, and Functional Immunology via Cogence. He has completed the Clinical Mastership Program through the Kharrazian Institute.

His private/telehealth practice is in Newnan, Georgia where he attends to patients of all ages with complex medical histories. His goal is to provide a personalized integrative clinical approach that incorporates the latest evidence-based methodologies.
