From Both Sides Of The Couch: Mindfulness, Mental Health, Resilience and Self-Care From a Therapist In Therapy

By: Dr. Laurie Bruce
  • Summary

  • I am Dr. Laurie Bruce, a clinical psychologist and mindfulness coach. For the last 25 years, I have had the privilege of providing psychotherapy, consultation and supervision to thousands of clients and students. One of my greatest joys is providing psychological and emotional support to other helpers: therapists, physicians, teachers, moms and anyone who finds themselves in the position of caring for others. If you are a health care professional or caregiver, you know how demanding our jobs can be. We carry the weight of all of our clients’ pain, day in and day out. It is essential that caregivers take the time and effort to engage in self-care. Without the proper self-care tools, the chronic exposure to human suffering can be traumatic, impacting us personally and professionally. My greatest form of self-care is to engage in my own personal therapy. I have had the privilege of working with some gifted therapists over the years. My investment in my own therapy has been the single most important gift I have given myself and it helps me to be the best therapist, mother and friend that I can be. This podcast is for you if you are a health care professional or therapist or anyone who gives so much to others that you have exhausted yourself. I am here to share wisdom that I have learned over the last two and a half decades from my clients, my supervisors and my own therapists. Join me for discussions on mindfulness, resilience, authenticity, radical acceptance, vulnerability, boundaries and so much more. Visit me at www.drlauriebruce.com

  • Family Roles with Karly Danos, LPCC, Part 1
    Jan 20 2025

Join Dr. Bruce in her podcast, 'From Both Sides of the Couch,' as she welcomes Karly Danos, a fellow therapist and licensed professional clinical counselor. This episode is a comprehensive dive into the various roles we assume in our family of origin, exploring how these roles influence us beyond childhood. Dr. Bruce and Karly unravel the concepts of family roles and birthrights, discussing the idea that each of us carries a 'healthy adult self' that we can get to know better by understanding these dynamics.

In the first part of this two-part series, Karly provides an overview of different family roles and together, they explore how our roles are adaptations to our family systems and how they may create challenges or strengths in our adult lives. This episode encourages listeners to reflect on their own family roles and consider how these have impacted their personal development.

As they move to discuss the pivotal concept of birthrights—innate qualities or rights we are born with—Dr. Bruce and Carly set the stage for understanding how unmet birthrights can lead to struggles in adulthood. Don't miss this opportunity to gain deeper insights and prepare for the next episode, where solutions and strategies will be explored.
