Child sex trafficking is the fastest-growing crime in the world with Texas having the second highest reported number of child sex-trafficking cases in the United States. On record over 79,000 young adults and minors have been sex trafficked in Texas. 

The Refuge for domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST for short) was founded outside of Austin, Texas by Brooke Crowder in 2013. This nonprofit was made in order to fund the Refuge Ranch. The ranch is a 23 building, $7.5 million residential therapeutic community for girls who range from young children to young adults. Here, the girls receive holistic, trauma informed care and have access to multiple therapeutic services.

Brooke (the organization’s founder) was unavailable during our time in Texas but luckily, Steven Phenix, Director of PR and communications was able to speak with us about this incredible organization and to shed some light on this difficult subject. 

On this episode we discuss: the signs of someone being sex trafficked, breaking down some of the most common sex-trafficking lies/misconceptions and the importance of just one positive adult in a child’s life.
