  • 38. Wear Your Scars Beautifully
    Jan 14 2022

On Feb 3rd 2020 four year old Rawkee Hunt was in an accident and was severely burned on her face and legs. It didn’t take long for Rawkee and her mom Megan, to turn such a tragic time into a positive calling on their life… they quickly opted to help other individuals and families affected by burns and trauma.

They have created a community of love and support for people going through the unimaginable; by providing care packages they call RAW boxes, creating inspiring videos, and starting the RAW Challenge which encourages others to share their stories of hardship and triumph. On this episode we speak with Meghan, and her daughter Rawkee, who started the organization R.A.W. (Real Authentic Warriors) . At 5 years old, Rawkee is our cutest and youngest guest to date.

Some points we touch on throughout our discussion are: the importance of finding a cause you’re personally connected with, remembering your “why”, and what it means to wear your scars beautifully.

  • 37. Fostering Hope With Love
    Sep 15 2021

It is estimated that around 424,00 children are in the foster care system, on any given day in the United States. For the foster parents that house these kids, they are often told mere hours prior to the child arriving and have little to no time to prepare.

This means, there can be a serious lack of supplies and essentials catered towards that child’s specific needs. Who was able to discover this issue and start the fight to fix it?

We sat down with Allie Roth in her home in Portland, Oregon and talked all about ‘With Love’, the organization Allie founded in 2013.

Allie was working as a school teacher that year when one of her students, April, had disclosed to her that she had lived in the three different foster homes within a few months. When Allie wanted to help provide clothing and school supplies, she realized that outside resources for under-school-age kids were hard to find.

She proceeded on a mission to bridge the gap with a group of friends, and within 6 months, they had provided more than 20 families with vital items they needed for child care.  Today, ‘With Love’ supports 120 Portland foster families each month with vital resources such as diapers, blankets, books, and sunscreen.

Some topics we cover in this episode include: why it’s important to look for the unserved while building a nonprofit, donors as your greatest advocates, and Allie takes us behind the scenes of what being a foster parent is like.

  • 36. Defending the Vulnerable
    Jun 29 2021

The World Health Organization states that about one in six adults (from age 60 and older) have experienced some form of abuse in community settings (like nursing homes and other long term care facilities) during this past year.

This number has been steadily increasing with the rise of the age of the global population. The elderly can be harmed in many ways including: financially, mentally and physically. So who is taking their time and effort to protect this vulnerable population?

We sat down with Carole Herman, founder and president of Foundation Aiding the Elderly (F.A.T.E. for short), at their office in Sacramento, California.

Carole, a successful business woman, founded FATE in 1982.  FATE’s mission is to assure elders are treated with care, dignity and the utmost respect during their final years when they can no longer take care of themselves. They do so by providing education, advocacy, tools, help families with reporting abuse, legal action, raising funds, and so much more.

On this episode we talk: avoiding elder abuse - how to protect your loved ones, the number one reason behind this neglect, and an untimely death - how losing a loved one propelled Carole into this line of work.
