About this listen

Shortlisted for the British Book Awards, Popular Fiction Award, 2007.

At Bagley Hall, a notoriously wild, but increasingly academic, independent, crammed with the children of the famous, trouble is afoot. The ambitious and fatally attractive headmaster, Hengist Brett-Taylor, hatches a plan to share the facilities of his school with Larkminster Comprehensive, known locally, as 'Larks'. His reasons for doing so are purely financial, but he is encouraged by the opportunities the scheme gives him for frequent meetings with Janna Curtis, the dynamic new head of Larks, who has been drafted in to save what is a fast-sinking school from closure. Janna is young, pretty, enthusiastic and vastly brave, and she will do anything to rescue her demoralised, run-down and cash-strapped school.

Neither parents nor staff of either school are too keen on this radical move, although some can see the possible financial advantages. For the students, however, it offers great opportunities to get up to even more mayhem than usual.

Disappointed it was so abridged but still enjoyed it

This is one of my favourite Jilly Cooper books so I was disappointed it was so short & so much missing. Although I still enjoyed it my advice would be to buy the book, the Audible is expensive for the length.

Not my cup of tea!

What would have made Wicked! better?

A better plot, more developed characters, a proper storyline. This was my first and last Jilly Cooper book. I enjoy many different genres of books and like to change between books (see underneath) and like to change between literature and light books but this was a bit too light for me.

What will your next listen be?

I have always a couple of books on the go depending on my mood I go on listening to different things. I just finished The Killing 2 which was great, also listening to A tiny bit marvellous by Dawn French, which is hilarious. Also listening to a brief history of Britain and Seven Ages which is a collection of poetry and nice to listen to in between. I am going to start on The Importance of Being Earnest now I think or the Queen's Gambit and return this book.

What about Samantha Bond’s performance did you like?

I like her voice and I have listened to another book she read, The Constant Princess. I have read already a lot of Philippa Gregory's books but Samantha Bonds rendition of this one really made me enjoy this one even more then the other ones from this author, that is why I gave this Jilly Cooper a try.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Immense boredom...

Any additional comments?

Thank you audible for returns!

Worst Jilly Cooper book

Such a let down. I'm convinced she didn't even write it.
The characters and storyline are not believable. There is no substance to any of the relationships.
None of the humour or charisma of her usual (old) books

Predictable Jilly

I've read quite a few of Jilly Cooper's books, so I know what to expect, and wasn't surprised or disappointed by this one. The plot is fast-paced and quite compelling, but totally unbelievable, with the usual endless bonking. There are too many characters, none of whom are very convincing. Jenna is simply silly - always bursting into tears, and hopelessly disorganised. How the hell did she get to be head of a comprehensive school?!!
There are all the usual Cooper stereotypes, most with stupid names. More or less what I expected: entertaining nonsense.
