About this listen

Elijah, seven years old, is covered in scars and has a history of disruptive behaviour. His adoptive mother Nikki believes that she and her husband Obi are strong enough to accept his difficulties - and that being white will not affect her ability to raise a black son.

Elijah's birth mother Deborah loves her son like the world has never known. Elijah thinks it's his fault they can't be together. Each of them faces more challenges than they could have dreamed, but just as Elijah starts to settle in, a shocking event rocks their fragile peace and the result is devastating.

From the Costa Prize-winning author of Tiny Sunbirds Far Away, this wonderful new novel is read by Adjoa Andoh, the award-winning voice of novels by Dorothy Koomson and Alexander McCall Smith.

Amazing

Was completely transfixed by the story of Elijah, his birth mama and his adoptive parents and family. Story was harrowing but beautiful narrated with an ending I wasn’t expecting and left me bereft.
Couldn’t stop listening didn’t want it to end.
Brilliant 👍🏾👍🏾 Loved it.

Wow

Wow oh wow! This was one of the most beautiful books I have heard in Audible. It is such a beautiful story and delves into mental health in a very delicate yet impactful way. It was also read very beautifully also. I shall be listening to this many times over…

A powerful and painful story about love and trauma

As someone who works with adoptive families, I found the language used and processes described were evidence that this topic was well researched. The writing & narration enabled all the characters to be multifaceted, tangible, authentic and fallible. listeners may benefit from a trigger warning due to the graphic descriptions of child abuse.

sometimes the best stories aren't nice

This is a tragic story but that doesn't mean it isn't worth reading. It's written beautifully and while very harrowing in places gives a non-judgemental voice to the toll mental illness can place on children. It also gives us a glimpse of the fostering and adoption system and how disjointed that world can be. I gave it 4 stars because sometimes the scenarios seemed slightly unrealistic in places. The narration makes up for it however. It's read beautifully and the characters are really brought to life in a way I'm not sure I would have fully appreciated if I was simply reading it.

Beautiful and tragic

This was such a good story, brilliantly told and narrated. It gives a perspective of different cultural beliefs and mental illness, and where the lines between these can become blurred. It examines motherhood, family ties, culture and kinship, openly yet gently exploring the joy, love and pain these relationships can bring. This book will stay on my mind for a very long time.

Heartbreaking and so real

A tale of love, hope and family. Not for the feint hearted. As always, superb narration. A worthy listen.

Wonderful!

This book undid me! Wow, what a story, narrated brilliantly by Adjoa Andoh
It’s about so much. Mental health, cultural identity, adoption, fear, hope, longing, but above all love. You need chunks of time to spend with this book because it is a roller coaster!
Although tragic & devastating, it is a story that will stay in my mind & has ultimately filled me with warmth. I hope it does the same for you!
