Summary
"Bisi Adjapon writes with incredible vividness and clarity. Extraordinary."—Dave Eggers, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
"Bisi Adjapon uses language like a finely tuned instrument, alternating moments of warmth with devastating revelations about identity, family, and those lies we tell ourselves in order to keep moving forward."— Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King
In this stunning debut novel—a tale of self-discovery and feminist awakening—a feisty Nigerian-Ghanaian girl growing up amid the political upheaval of late 1960s postcolonial Ghana begins to question the hypocrisy of her patriarchal society, and the restrictions and unrealistic expectations placed on women.
Young Esi Agyekum is the unofficial "secret keeper" of her family, as tight-lipped about her father's adultery as she is about her half-sisters' sex lives. But after she is humiliated and punished for her own sexual exploration, Esi begins to question why women's secrets and men's secrets bear different consequences. It is the beginning of a journey of discovery that will lead her to unexpected places.
As she navigates her burgeoning womanhood, Esi tries to reconcile her own ideals and dreams with her family's complicated past and troubled present, as well as society's many double standards that limit her and other women. Against a fraught political climate, Esi fights to carve out her own identity, and learns to manifest her power in surprising and inspiring ways.
Funny, fresh, and fiercely original, Of Women and Frogs marks the American debut of one of West Africa's most exciting literary talents.

Greatest 'Teller of Sectets', ever!
The narrator was excellent, and the author wrote with so much clarity that I struggled to pause listening, even for the briefest of moments.
This was an absolutely enjoyable book, a real literary masterpiece. I particularly enjoyed both the historical journey and the opportunity to be able to visualise those geographical references to places in West Africa that are close to my heart...

Wow
I didn’t know what to expect when I started listening to this book. I initially thought it was strictly a Nigerian book given the first name of the author ‘Bisi’. So I was shocked when I heard a Ghanaian reader but I continued, she reads well but like the other review says, she mispronounced the majority of the Nigerian words. They could have taught her or had two readers. That aside, amazing book by the author and well done to the reader. 10/10

I thoroughly enjoyed this book
Loved the story and the voice actor. She did a good job. It would have been a solid 5 stars but the Nigerian aspect was lacking. I did not flinch but I nearly did every time, Naija was involved. She tried though.

An Absolutely Brilliant Read
This wonderful book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. The narrator, Anniwaa Buachie, was great and Bisi Adjapon had me laughing so much, whilst at the same time educating me on a section of Ghana’s more recent and dark history. My deepest heart remained with the central character Esi, as I experienced both Ghana and Nigeria through her rather perceptive eyes. I loved it that I grew up with her and felt her very wide range of emotions, many of them, both triggering memories of my own life experiences and bringing me new ways to resolve my own issues. Bisi Adjapon is an amazing weaver of tales, for in telling Esi’s story, she drew out many healing fibres, colours and textures in the darning of my own tale. I suspect it has done so for many others.
I can’t wait to read her next book.
