About this listen
Harlan always dreamed he’d marry Susie and have a family. Ed, her dad, planned for her to go to Stephens finishing school and marry a professional man like her mother. Ed told Harlan to find another girl. Harlan started drinking and got in trouble. His choice: jail or military.
As he left for boot camp, he promised Susie and his parents he’d make them proud. After nine months of airborne radar school, his Tulsa Air National Guard unit was activated. Their mission was to back up the Special Forces in Vietnam. They flew from Tulsa to Seattle, San Diego, Honolulu, Wake, Guam, Philippines, Okinawa, Saigon, Bangkok, then home.
While in-ground combat Sergeant Clark taught Harlan to embrace the fear: Adrenaline makes you a predator rather than a victim. Two years later when Susie came home, Harlan proposed. She said yes, with Ed's approval. Ed and Harlan were soon nose to nose.
