About this listen

Bloomsbury presents The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall, read by Georgina Sadler.

The New York Times and USA Today bestseller
For fans of Practical Magic and Gilmore Girls this charming debut novel and TikTok sensation is packed full of romance, charm and plenty of magic . . .

Revelare witches are cursed. As long as they use their magic, they are doomed to four heartbreaks.

So far, Sadie Revelare has experienced three – the devastating departure of her mother and the loss of her brother. And the most painful heartbreak of all: Jake McNealy, her first love. Ever since, Sadie has done everything she can to protect herself from more pain.

But now Sadie's beloved grandmother is sick. And without her, Sadie isn't sure she will have the strength to keep her family and her magic together.

As Sadie’s carefully structured life begins to unravel, Jake returns to town after a decade away. And in the face of a final heartbreak that could tear Sadie apart, she must decide once and for all: is love more important than magic?

The perfect read for anyone looking for a cosy and warm, witchy novel to curl up with this autumn.

Perfect for the autumnal season and will make your heart swell with love

This book was pitched as Practical Magic meets The Gilmore Girls and whilst I’ve only seen snippets of The Gilmore Girls (don’t come for me!) I LOVE LOVE LOVE Practical Magic. And so this was a must buy for me.

I really enjoyed this book. And it is most definitely filled with heartbreak and magic.

I really enjoyed the character of Sadie and her deep love of her magic. I loved how each of the characters surrounding her understood her and tried to nudge her in the right direction and how she clung steadfast to her magic and her avoidance of another heartbreak.

I loved how magical explanations were infused into everything and the explanations for each recipe shared and what they were for. It made me want magic of my own 🥰

The recipes in the book are simple to follow and add so much to the book - I feel like a separate mini book is needed as an accompaniment so that I don’t splash ingredients all over this lush story 😍

Overall if you love magical realism then I cannot recommend this book enough. Perfect for the autumnal season and will make your heart swell with love.

As good as I thought it would be

I saw the author on Instagram, marketing this book as Gilmore Girls x Practical Magic. It lives up to expectation. I love it.

Lovely book for Autumn

Original story with a warm feel to it. Some of the narrator's accents were a bit strange but not a big negative. Would relisten again next year.

Brilliant

I found this such a heartwarming story and I absolutely loved the narrator who brought each character to life. I found myself smiling at some of the characters who reminded me so much of myself and members of my own family and community. I enjoyed the culinary theme interwoven throughout and am looking forward to making some of the recipes features at the end of each chapter. The magical theme was not too overly done and for someone who loves a witchy book, I thought it was brilliant.
All in all, it is what it professes to be- witchy, foodie, family, love and heartbreak. My kind of story!

Feelgood but boring

Nice to read, but everytime you think something interesting is going to happen- nothing does. Hallmark/Good Witch- vibes. But if you just want to relax and take your mind of things- its worth a read.

Southern Small town story in California?

Not my cup of tea... made it Chapter 4... the narrator sounded too young to pull of the FMC, however she is very immature so maybe that was done on purpose?

One fun part of the book were the recipes after every chapter... however listening to them was a bit weird.

Badly written protagonist

This was a DNF for me. I stopped at chapter 4. I refuse to read stumbling, unsure, quivering under their own thoughts, whiny grown women. How many of those do you know in real life?! Yeah, none.
It’s not charming and it’s not endearing, it’s lazy writing, and even lazier editing.
Not to mention the chirping narration. It made me physically tense to listen to the overly dramatic high pitch.
