About this listen

A novel of love, gangsters, and Elvis impersonators

George Thring runs away from home. By accident.

Depressed, lonely, and tired of life, George Thring leaves work one night but never makes it home. Before he knows it, he's driven over 200 miles in the wrong direction and finds himself in a strange little town, in the middle of nowhere, during their annual Elvis Presley appreciation festival.

As he stumbles from one mishap to another, George meets the woman of his dreams, unwittingly aids in a bank robbery, and finds himself pursued by both the police and a gang of angry criminals. With a big life decision to make, and a girl to try and win over, George is given the chance to become the hero he has always wanted to be.

But is he brave enough to take it?

What a lovely tale

I picked this up from the Plus Catalog with no expectations and it was a great listen. Good fun and well performed.

Enjoyable comedy of errors

Very enjoyable comedy of errors and the underdog becomes top dog. Fun listen and would recommend. A nice break from my usual sort of book.

Such fun

A book that makes a joy out of the details. A book to relax to and reflect on your life. Oddly, early on I thought it was based in the USA but it must have been getting into the zone cause of the whole affair. Been there

Entertaining!

Great and entertaining story. Although plot & narration were very good, I found the narrator's style a little stilling, rather like when celebrities on Radio 4 have 1 minute to talk about a topic and they stretch their words out to avoid a pause. Other than that, it was enjoyable.

A rolling wonderful story

I didn’t know what to think of this when I downloaded it but it was free and 17 hours long and I was doing some house painting so I thought I would give it a try. SO GLAD I DID. Plot wise it’s really hard to start as it ducks and dives almost every five minutes. It is surreal, odd and outrageous all it once and very funny. Our hero winds up in a small town having a festival. That’s really all I can tell you without spoiling it. What I can say is if you like good writing, a plot with so many twists and turns you can hardly keep up then this is for you. I enjoyed every second of it and so will you.

an unusual story

I found this extremely funny in a silly way. An Elvis convention in a small town and an unassuming man. The narrator gave such a wonderful performance he had me laughing out loud on several occasions. It's been a long since a book that was meant to be fun made me laugh so hard. Give it a go even if you find it silly. If it doesn't tickle a funny bone it's not the book nor narrator 😉🤪

Great fun

What a fun book, great characterisation and an interesting premise. Some laugh out loud moments and a happy ending. A great listen especially for free! I would look out for more from the same author.

Bloody good!

Bloody, bloody, bloody, bloody good. A bloody good story which had me chortling at most unexpected places. Reminds me a bit of the "Wilt" stories with attitude.

Strange to identify with main character

Narration is excellent, it helps if the narrative is well written. Most readers will know a Mr. Thring. Strange and novel tale of a mild implosion.
