About this listen
Sunderland, 1940, and the women go to the shipyards to do their bit for the war effort. Polly never dreamed she would be able to work in the shipyards like the men in her family but times are tough and her new job ends up giving her more than she ever expected when she meets enigmatic dock diver Tommy Watts. During the day, head welder Rosie teaches her fledgling flock of trainees their new trade, but at night she hides a secret life. And mother hen Gloria signs up to escape her brutal husband, but finds she cannot run from her problems. The Shipyard Girls start off as strangers - but end up forging an unbreakable bond of friendship in the most difficult times.

Not just for women
NOT JUST A WOMANS BOOK , after a couple of men had said it was good so I downloaded it as I just don’t have time to read, drawn in and hooked, angry at some characters, shouting at others, rooting for some, very accurate portrayal in certain chapter, very enjoyable book to pass the time driving to work, hopefully book 2 is available on download soon, cmon audible sort it out

Beautiful story
What a beautiful story. All walks of life come together, all to help to the war effort.
Sad and happy at times and also wishing some of the couples get it together.. But brilliant story.
I recommend people to buy this wonderful story.

Brilliant gritty story
The story is absolutely brilliant, very engrossing and enlightening.
The narrator reads it beautifully and enriches the narrative of the area in which the story is set so well.

The Shipyard Girls
This was the first book that I have read from this author. It took me a wee while getting into the story, but when I did, I enjoyed it.
The narrator was good.
