About this listen

Either I defeat the monster or I become the monster.

As if being locked up in the crazy house wasn’t bad enough, I wake up to discover that the person I trust most in the world just morphed into a bloodthirsty monster. My only chance for escape comes in the form of two women calling out from within a shimmering tunnel. So, it's either stick around and get murdered or jump through some kind of portal.

I take the option that doesn’t involve dying and find myself ushered into an ancient society of witches. I'm given a choice: I can either go it alone and take my chances or join their magical training program. The problem being I didn't even know I had magic, never mind the kind that can open a doorway between realms. But that’s exactly why I’m being hunted by a Fae demon looking to settle an old score. Now, I either find a way to defeat him or he’ll be using my magic to bring in the rest of his kind. If that happens, it won’t only mean the end for the world of witches. It’ll mean the end of the world.

The Shadow Order is a fast-paced, unpredictable new urban fantasy. If you like snarky kickass heroines, fast-paced action, magic, witchcraft, and romance, then grab it today!

Fact paced and entertaining

Amaya has spent six years in a mental hospital after being discovered with no memory. When after a massacre she discovers that what she sees is actually real and she has powers this is both disturbing and terrifying. Taken to the Shadow order training she makes friends and enemies and her destiny. Great story the is part of a larger series but can be read as a standalone, the characters are strong, especially the females. The writing is excellent, fast paced and entertaining, with lots of twists and shocks. Any Hall apart from a couple of odd pronunciations brings the story to life with her performance.

The Shadow Order

Story is well written and the characters have been nicely developed. Many secrets unfold but there is still more to learn. Can't wait till I start book 2.

Enjoyed this book.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I suppose the basic storyline has been told many times - young woman experiences some weird things and goes on to discover she has magic, and although she struggles to access it and gets into some close scrapes as a result. However, I think the characters are outlined and developed well, and the story has plenty of surprises to keep things moving along. I would describe the book as excellent entertainment.

An original story

It was nice to actually listen to a story that has a somewhat original storyline, something that is quite hard these days.
Great characters, good storyline. This book will keep you entertained the whole way through, from psych wards to pocket dimensions this book has it all. The story does end on a bit of a cliffhanger but you have to expect that so that the story can continue.
Amy has done a great job narrating this book.

Left swimming in fantasy

Going to a magic school as a young adult, this isn’t your Harry Potter story. The story is from the viewpoint of a girl in her early 20s trying to figure out her life now she’s found out she has magic powers, of sorts… There is swearing, mild sexual content and a lot interesting takes on the ‘standard’ magical beings.

Early on the book sets down a lot of background information that might conflict somewhat with the standard mythos you might have come to expect from say Vampires or a Witch. This isn’t a bad thing though, and if you’re happy to listen and take onboard some of the spiel about abilities and what is or isn’t true, then you’re rewarded with interesting adventures early on.

Once you get past the early part of the book you’re rewarded with an exciting plot and fantasy lure to explore.

I’m not usually a fan of female narrators who try to do different (male) voices, the deeper voice is usually a problem but Amy Hall pulled it out of the bag and the male characters didn’t sound off. Great job on that, it was a pleasure to listen to as a result.

cool magic and fun characters

This is the second book I have read/listened to by this author and I’m now on book four of this series.
I am really enjoying the world that is created in this story. I like the variation in magic, the introduction of different monsters and creatures, as well as the different pocket worlds that exist.
The characters are all given their own personalities and I think the plot is overall well done. I do think that sometimes there is too much use of “—- said”. It is especially noticeable when multiple characters are having a quick conversation. It’s a little jarring to listen to and pulled me out of the story every time.
I have since learned that Cassie has her own series, which probably explains why the chapters alternate between her and Amaya’s point of view. The relationship between these two characters, I find quite funny.

This is the second book I have listened to by this narrator. I had a few hiccups with the first book and getting mixed up as to which character was speaking for a couple of the voices that are very similar. Now I’m used to it, I found this one easier to listen to. Her style is still such she still has the tendency to lower the emphasis at the end of sentences which gives that ‘reading’ vibe, but it is slight. She does well narrating otherwise and does bring the story to life. An enjoyable listen.
