Summary

Oscar Wilde's only novel, given a superbly splendid modern reading by the talented Rupert Graves. Many classic Wilde quotes emanate from this horror novel.

Critic reviews

"Dorian Gray, hedonistic and decadent, makes a Faustian pact to keep his youthful beauty as captured in his portrait. The story, lit by Wilde's aphoristic sparkle, is brilliant, as is Rupert Grave's finely judged narration." ( The Observer)

The Picture of Dorian Gray

As I reread this book every year, and have read both the uncensored version and the non abridged version, I thought it was about time that I read (or rather listened) to the abridged version. Graves, who narrates the story, has a way of drawing the reader in, and his reading voice is strong and distinct, particularly when differentiating between characters and narration. The only thing I can fault with this audiobook is the overtly loud musical interludes.

Great performance, annoying recording

Rupert Graves reads this beautifully but the musical interludes are bloody annoying. Otherwise I loved this.

A fine narration

It's a classic for a reason, and the relatively short length means you could listen to it all over a single afternoon.

A timeless story well read

Well read and dramatised, Rupert Graves made this classic tale very enjoyable, so much so I finished it in 2 sittings.

Not an enjoyable lesson overall

The reader tried to put expression into his voice, and was quite good at characterisation, however, I’m afraid there was a lack of awareness of meaning in some of the reading. Unfortunately, for me, it came over as rather amateurish I’m afraid. I stopped listening, and found a better version.
