About this listen
Exclusively from Audible
In true Dickensian fashion, The Old Curiosity Shop offers a humorous yet devastating depiction of both the most honourable and most corrupt members of 19th-century English society.
Hailed by Queen Victoria as being ‘interesting and cleverly written', The Old Curiosity Shop introduces listeners to the uniquely colourful characters of Nell Trent, her young friend, Kit, her doting grandfather and the evil moneylender to whom they all fall prey, Daniel Quilp.
A gentle and caring young orphan, Nell works in her grandfather’s shop alongside her only friend, the honest and hardworking Kit.
Upon discovering that their shop and income have been gambled away and are now in the hands of the wicked and grotesquely deformed Daniel Quilp, Nell and her grandfather are forced to flee from their hometown and throw themselves on the mercy of strangers; forever to be hunted by the malevolent ghosts of their past.
First published in 1841 in serial form, The Old Curiosity Shop experienced worldwide success and was praised by the public and critics alike. In this modern and original adaptation, Jessie Buckley delivers an astute and powerful performance which is guaranteed to intrigue listeners from the start.

Another of Dickens Classics
This story was brought to life by the excellent narration of Jessie Buckley. Her excellent dialogue was enhanced by her changes in character accent throughout the entire book. One of the best narrators I have heard to date.

Excellent tale, great narration
Dickensian masterpiece with strong characters and a narrative that touches on poverty, addiction, justice and charity. Quilp is a true villain and Samson Brass his weak & pliable instrument. You are drawn into loving Kit & Nell throughout. Wonderfully performed to boot.

Sounds AI generated
The story is great (of course) but the narrator sounds like a badly programed AI. No understanding of the sense of sentences, just saying words. It's not completely unlistenable, but in a lesser story I would have given up after an hour.
Dickens has such beautiful prose, too. The rhythm was completely lost in this reading, replaced by exactly one intonation pattern for every phrase. And the voice itself has a lovely tone. Really, too bad.

Absolutely blown away. Why haven’t I discovered Charles Dickens before?
Another fantastic story full of rounded characters and terrible villains. An insight into the evils of Victorian society (and indeed our own). A good novel leaves you thinking hard - and this one doesn’t disappoint on that score. These characters could be anyone at any time. They are as real today as at any time. It took a while to enjoy this narrator. Some of the voices sounded the same, which was a little confusing at times, but overall, a good effort.

Dickens at his best
Been over 30 years since I had read the book. Dickens paints the most wonderful characters with his use of the English language, and Jessie Buckley brings it to life beautifully.

Dickens mastered
I saw every scene, walked every step and was fully involved in the Victorian atmosphere - thanks to Jessie Buckley. Her storytelling was brilliant - Dickens would have been pleased!
