About this listen
What is really happening in your brain when you use your phone, and how to harness it.
Humans are often fearful of the day the world will be ruled by machines, but have they not already taken over? The average person spends 4-5 hours a day on their phone, about a third of the time they are awake. We self-interrupt our work and social lives, forgo sleep, procrastinate important tasks and opt for digital distraction when we're bored or feel uncomfortable.
NHS neurology doctor and neuroscientist Faye Begeti describes what is happening in our brain when we use our phones and why we have formed so many fixed and negative habits around them. She reflects on both deliberate choices and automatic behaviours, whilst also challenging myths around digital 'addiction', how dopamine actually works and the harmfulness of blue light.
Rather than recommending a quick fix digital diet, or total abstinence—unviable for most people—The Phone Fix offers a practical guide, based on neuroscientific techniques, on building supportive digital habits. Technology is not inherently bad or frightening and by better understanding what is happening in our brains, we can replenish our willpower and improve our focus, forming a healthier relationship with our phones—and therefore the real people around us.

Brain science at its best.
I'm two thirds through and I'm totally engrossed! It explains how our brains work in a very easy to understand format and the decisions we make navigating the digital world. It is full of useful tips that help you get the most out of the technology whilst putting you back in control. Some of the tips are so good that they can be applied to other areas of your life. I don't think I've ever implemented some of the recommendations so quickly from a book before and I haven't even finished. I have encountered a massive mindset shift that is truly empowering. Dr Kaye Bageti, thank you for sharing such tremendous work.

A BRILLIANT listen full of unexpected ideas and how to preserve your brain energy!
I have ADHD and I was worried about listening to a longer audiobook, but I’m so glad I did… because I am absolutely hooked! I don’t want to spoil some of the twists, but the author makes really good arguments FOR some types of phone use.
I’ve also learnt some funny new words like ‘phubbing’ (I look forward to slipping these into conversations!)
I liked the tips on preserving brain energy and how to get out of ‘low power mode’, too. This book is essential listening for anyone who feels like they want to learn some brain science from a genuine expert; to better understand your phone use; and - crucially - to decide if scrolling helps or hinders you (…because it varies between people - which I didn’t realise!)

It’s quite long stretched
Didn’t enjoy it. Found it boring & long stretched in terms of the context. Wasn’t able to build interest
