Summary

The Missing of the Somme has become a classic meditation upon war and remembrance. It weaves a network of myth and memory, photos and films, poetry and sculptures, graveyards and ceremonies that illuminate our understanding of, and relationship to, the Great War.

As somebody much wiser than me said...

.. this is the great, Great War book of our time. It’s not a history but a response to the art, poetry, photography and architecture that arose from the mud. It’s also a sometimes very funny mini travelogue of a visit to the western front. The last few pages, a visit to the Thiepval monument are just so lyrical and lovely... Dyer has put into words what I feel about that place. Recommended.
