About this listen

Dawn of Fire Book 6

The zealous Black Templars and the Order of Our Martyred Lady hold a shrine world against the Death Guard – a guttering light in the darkness.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Marc Collins shows us how desperate the fight can get in the swirl of the Indomitus Crusade. Every world defended is worthy of celebration, no matter the cost.

THE STORY

The Indomitus Crusade burns across the stars, while new threats emerge to challenge the Imperium's resurgence.

As the Kingdom of Iron is secured and the Primarch Reborn's thoughts turn to future salients, the Arch-enemy strikes back against the Indomitus Crusade's forces. The shrine worlds of the Golden Chain are all but broken, and only Velua remains defiant. Canoness Irinya of the Order of Our Martyred Lady and Champion Gaheris of the Black Templars hold the line, fighting against the plague-ridden cultists reducing the planet to anarchy.

While the war rages on and the true enemy makes itself known, the fate of Velua and the wider crusade may rest upon the shoulders of another of the Imperial Regent's agents: the disgraced Rogue Trader Katla Helvintr. Heroes rise and worlds fall, and only the light of faith will guide the warriors of the Imperium to their destiny.

So many sermons

Throne there are a lot of sermons.

Sisters: earnest sermons.
Black Templars: furious sermons.
Death Guard: stinky moustache twirling sermons.

I've enjoyed this series so far but this is really dreadful. I know that Sisters and Templars invite this sort of nonsense but there must be some attempt to write characters with more depth than this. You can safely skip this and move on with your life.

Excellent narration though.

Surprisingly good

Normally can’t stand the Black Templars and Sisters but this is actually a brilliant tale. Fits well into the larger Dawn of Fire series arc.

Feels superfluous

Builds characters and some interesting narrative ideas up at the beginning to have them play out over a very short period and not particularly satisfactorily. Doesn’t really tie into the predeceeding books in the series at all. Book for books sake it feels like.

Also really starting to question how many traitor legionaries from the siege days can still be around at this point. They die frequently and in great numbers it seems.

tales of the templars and machinations of chaos

good pace and story and enjoyable and a good continuation from the previous story with characters driving home the primarch vision and a good rogue trader story to get through the rift

A Slow Start But Does Get Better

I found the first 3rd of the book very slow and interesting with not much reallu happening, though it does improve and move along better in the rest. Not the best listen ever, but not the worst either if you stick with it.

Stop making 40k child’s

It’s late and I’m tired and sick. These dawn books are an upfront to the other narratives such as bequin and isenhorn. Go play with yourself instead.

Excellent Narration, boring story

The narration is as good as ever, excellent character inflections and emotion in battle or during the few bits of character development.

The story however is woefully lacking and disappointing. It was a genuine chore towards the end.

The enemy characters of the death guard were interesting and their motivations were kinda cool, but they played a very small part.

The cultists could have been cool, but bar one prophet they were again minimal to the story

The sisters of battle was just one big battle with their insufferable "in his name" yadda yadda. The Cannoness did have some cool back story hit it was drip fed the entire time, she'd have been far more interesting if they didn't keep the most important parts of her back story until the last few chapters

The black templars started off strong, then they were just bolter porn for 3/4 of the book.

The rogue trader was interesting, but again very limited time spent on her actual character

The book can be summed up as one, long, repetitive battle.

Superfluous and a little too long

Perhaps overly ‘world setting-up’ for future books. Hope the characters reappear again. Enjoyed the characterisation and performance.

Good for Black Templars and Sisters fans

The story is quite light in terms of plot. But combat is written well and one can appreciate the characters and philosophies that drive each.

Dawn of War: The Martyr's Side Quest.

as a standalone novel of decent length about Sororitas, Black templars, Death Guard, and a Custodian as well as rogue traders; it's a good book to sink your teeth into. As a Dawn of Fire Novel, it has nothing in relation to previous books which at least had some returning characters. I don't think there are any returning here besides some Guilliman flashbacks, so it has nothing to Anchor itself to the greater Dawn of Fire story arc.

it's a shrine world attacked by Death Guard being defended by Sororitas and Black templars, that is IT. if you like that kind of thing, go ahead and give it a listen/read. if you just want the dawn of fire narrative, it's probably the first skippable book I'd recommend in the series, which is generous considering we're six novels in.
