About this listen
1348. The Black Death enters England through the port of Melcombe; the people of the county start to die in the thousands. In the demesne of Develish, Lady Anne takes control of her people's future, chooses a bastard slave, Thaddeus Thurkell, to act as her steward, and together they decide to quarantine Develish by bringing the serfs inside the walls. With this sudden overturning of the accepted social order, where serfs exist only to serve their lords, conflicts soon arise....

Enjoyable story
I really liked this book, it well described the hardship and indeed horrors the so called lowly men, women and children endured in the 14th century.
The story was well narrated and I found I just had to make time to keep listening.

Great
I have loved Minette Waters' books for many years. This did not disappoint in any way. An interesting and well told story that held my full attention from start to finish. I enjoyed it so much that I bought the next book in the series and started to listen as I want to know what happens next to the characters. Helen Keeley's narration is excellent and really brings the book to life.

No ending!
Really enjoyed the story and its graphic portrayal of the Black Death effect on the population. Felt cheated as it became apparent the book was not going to come to a conclusion and another book will follow.

Thoroughly enjoyable yarn
Enjoyable romp through the demesnes of Edward III at a pivotal point in history. Clear storytelling and excellent narration make this a pleasure to listen to and I will enjoy the cliffhanger resolution of Book 2.

Amazing research all wound about into fiction
Wonderful depiction of England during the Black Death and subsequent crop failures. The writing is well crafted and the research is never intrusive, it flows beautifully into the story and creates detailed and fascinating world. I loved the characters, although I felt the daughter was a little overblown. Shame this is just the first part of the tale.

Excellent Storytelling by Author and Narrator
I’ve loved Minette Walters books since I first read the Ice House in the 90s. This has been a brilliant listen, just packed with believable characters and telling a great story. Really puts you into the period and educates without showing its working.
I miss the thrillers so much, but I’ll happily take the historical intrigue.
Excellent narration - I’d seek out other books narrated by Helen Keeley.

Brilliant!
I enjoyed this so much, it was the audiobook equivalent of being very “un-putdownable”. Such a good story and a great performance too. This deserves a high budget BBC adaptation!
