Summary

Book one in the Kings of Avalier series: a full-length fantasy romance standalone with an HEA

The Dragon King is looking for a wife…

The news causes a frenzy for the women in my village. The king will be sending out the royal guard to bring women of childbearing age to his castle in Jade City.

There is only one requirement: his wife-to-be must carry enough magic to produce an heir for him.

I know I won’t be chosen: I’m only human with a mere ten percent dragon magic lineage, but for some reason the magic sniffers command me to present myself to the king as a possible wife.

I’m ready to go to Jade City until my mother tells me a terrifying secret. A secret that could get me killed…by the king himself.

The Last Dragon King is book ONE OF FOUR in the Kings of Avalier series, featuring the Dragon King, Drae Valdren.

Great Book

I enjoy reading this book and now I enjoy hearing it too. Sad that Queen Amelia died after loosing 3 children. I am glad Arwen could have twin daughters though

The worst Pick me FMC

This book is an interesting concept executed poorly. The FMC is basically just Katniss but less interesting. She is so focused on “not being like other girls” but immediately is just happy to be a rented womb.

And the MMC doesn’t give a shit about her as long as he can have an heir.
The whole thing gives me the ick. He puts in so little effort it’s embarrassing.

Also it feels like the names are just taken from other fantasy books.

Just overall very pick me and cringe!

Love love love

I really don't know how leia does it , every single book just as good as her last if not better honestly... The main heroine in this book is kind , loving , loyal powerful , funny and a bad arse ... Can't recommend this book enough.

Fab world building and strong characters

Not enough steam for me, but otherwise a really fantastic book. Gentle but immersive world building? Strong individual characters, and ell narrated so each could easily be identified - the story angered me a little as the ‘duty’ part interfered with the HEA but again that is a me thing, and actually made sense within the story and world in which it was set.

Easy, cozy read, underdeveloped plot. 3.5 Stars

I had a really hard time deciding on a rating for this book. This book started at 5 stars for me but then so many things let me down. So in the end, I settled for 3.5 stars.

This story is about Arwen, a mostly human, barely-dragon girl, who lives in a village called Cinder Village, which is basically the ugly stepchild of the kingdom of Embergate, home of the dragonfolk. One day, soldiers from the capital show up in her village looking for a bride for the king. He needs an heir and as he needs a wife who has enough dragon magic to be able to carry his magic-powerful child. Despite Arwen’s belief that she lacks substantial magic, she gets chosen to go to the capital (Jade City) to compete with other girls from the kingdom for the king’s hand. It only gets more interesting from there.

I really liked the world building in this story. It was creative enough but not overwhelming. It was easy enough to understand all the different elements and how they came to be.

I liked the way the dragon king was written. His character is likeable, turned loveable from the beginning. I love how he cares about his people and he’s not arrogant.

Arwen is your typical “not like other girls”, “I hunt and don’t like dresses”, type of girl. Kind of like Feyre from ACOTAR and I like that about her. She’s bold and knows who she is.

The plot had good bones, but the development was a letdown. This book is only 6.5 hours long. It’s a fantasy book. It’s allowed to be 24+ hours. I think it needed at least 5 more hours to flesh out the story. After they get to Jade City, the story moves too quickly. There’s instant attraction between the two characters but the romance is a slow burn, although how don’t really feel the slow burn because of how quickly the plot is carried along. There’s a lot of action that happened in the last third of the book that happened way too quickly and should have been given more page time.

This is a YA book so there is no spice. The focus on purity culture may annoy some people, but I was fine with it. It’s set in a historical time when that would be the norm. Especially since she’s a from a village.

I like how the end of this book led into the next one. It’s an interconnected stand-alone, but it has me itching to know what happens to the Elf King, especially when it sounds like the Dragon King who we’ve grown to love, may appear in that book.

I enjoyed the narration in this book. The actors did a good job of keeping me engaged. IT's a YA book so there is no spice, but there are a few steamy scenes and the narrators did well to portray the strong feelings the characters were experiencing in those moments.

Did I love this book? No. did I enjoy it? Yes. Would I recommend this book to someone? Only if they’re looking for a cozy, easy read. Will I be reading the next book in the series? Most likely.

Gave me the ick, teebs

If you love internalised misogyny labeled as femisism, inexperienced 18yos being coerced into pregnancy by a much older man, and that vague "Christian ideals" aftertaste, then this book has everything, but for me the vibes were off, bestie.

Shout out to the narrator.

Very boring

It was a great idea and the beginning was promising but then nothing happened in the end. No character development, no depth of the villain, next to zero romance although it was a Romantasy book. The writing itself is not bad but the plot needed more captivating points and action.
