About this listen

A fascinating and hilarious gallop through twentieth-century British history, by comedian Al Murray.

An awful lot has happened in the last 100 years or so. In fact, when you look at how much went on in the 20th century, it's amazing it didn't take longer than that.

And what have we learnt? A few obvious lessons include: megalomaniac men with moustaches in charge of countries tend to turn out to be BAD; anyone who thinks they can explain let alone sort out the Middle East is WRONG; France simply cannot be relied upon; America may or may not be the cause of everything GOOD and BAD in the world (depending on who you ask).

This isn't your bog-standard history book. We all know that history books (Which Shall Not be Questioned because they ARE ALL TRUE according to our History Teachers of Yore) are dry and dull, and they go on as if there's only ONE version of history (spoiler: it's all about perspective). Enter Al Murray, alter-ego of everyone's favourite Pub Landlord.

Al knows his way around 20th century Britain, and he's good enough to illuminate it for you. From the Big Bang of the 20th Century, DOUBLEYOUDOUBLEYOU ONE, to the eve of the new Millennium (when all the computers in the World DIDN'T stop working and the Queen had to do the Hokey Cokey with Tony Blair) and all the forgotten tales in between, this is a brilliantly funny, irreverent and eye-opening whistle-stop tour of Britain since 1914.

Serious history ... with jokes

If you like your history to be sprinkled with humour, this is worth a listen. An edited view of the main events of the last 100 years. It's a good listen and proper history. Some of the jokes are good too.

history made enjoyable

Al Nurray talks his way through the major parts of world history in his own stylish way including WW1 WW2 the cold war, indian partition and other historic events such as the World cup 1966.

it's all very entertaining and had it been like this during school history lessons, I might have paid more attention. very funny and clever as well, making valid comparisons and asking questions like; why doesn't mankind ever learn when history repeats the same things over and over?

Great to lose a few hours and have a chuckle.
I listen to unwind from the stress of the day, and it does just that.

Great stuff again from Al Murray

Just wish it was a bit longer. Seemed to rush towards the end. Still great though.

Enjoyed it

A whistle stop tour of the last 100 years by a man who knows his stuff.
It could've been twice as long and I still wouldn't have gotten bored listening to Al speaking about history.
(Al is not in Pub Landlord mode for this one, more like his real self as he was in "Watching War films .....")

The Last 100 years Give Or Take

I really loved this book, a very funny take on the last 100 years of history. I Particularly loved the description of the civil rights movement in the US and the way black people were treated which I agree didn't make any sense when they had just got rid of Hitler but maybe they didn't see the irony of it. I really loved the naration, it was very good.

Al Murray runs down the last 100 years

A witty take on the last 100 years of history, or there abouts. I only wish the book had been longer
