Light hearted and self depricating read

Fantastic listen, light hearted and with a few laugh out loud moments. Might be a bit impenetrable to those outside of the military due to the parlance. But its a book written for soldiers.

Woke old feelings up..

Mr Hennesseys book, read in his own words as he intended it to be heard was a rare treat.. My military career had some similarities to his, I was not an officer, but I was sn infantry soldier and my battalion also did the OMLT Afghan Army Mentoring role, and it was a nice surprise to realise it was my unit 2Yorks that took over from his unit in this role in Autumn of 2007, and his description of the role, the Afghans, the culture, the country and the heat, the experiences with terms, donkeys, and casualties all obviously different instances to mine but so much the same as well! Even on my Tour of Helmand, this time part of the PMAG, Police Mentoring and Advisory Group, which was basically the OMLT all over again but for the ANP instead of the ANA and my last Tour of Helmand as part of the BRF partnered with Afghan Special Forces and 1PARA all had such similarities that things and feelings I'd forgotten suddenly woke up and I was feeling excitements, loves, hopes, sadnesses, laughs and angers and losses that I'd put away years ago! This for me turned into a very powerful book and captures one of the wars of my generation perfectly.. If you are a veteran and are ready to see and face certain things again then this Audiobook is the perfect choice.. If you're not ready, give it a miss for a year or two. For the civilians of the audience who want to understand the mentality and complex nature of modern young men in war, I can also steer you no better than to this tittle here.

This is unquestionably one of the best books on audible. Compelling, informative and real.

excellent narration and a well written

I am glad to have read this important book. Thank you for writing , a good book for someone who wants to be better informed about modern military life without being subjected to the full visual impact at the cinema, or pages of gratuitous violence and bad language. I think you have communicated reality effectively but in an accessible way.

As Frank a description of combat as any.

I loved this. But would have liked more context about the Afghan war, particularly now we've left and the Taliban have taken over, what was it all for?

Fascinating read!

Really interesting insight into the passage of officer, from recruit, through Officer training, to active service, culminating with time in Afghanistan. Reveals so much about the British Army, and the reasons why young men and women decide to commit themselves to army life. Highly recommended.

The Junior Officer's Reading Club

For anyone who wants to know what modern war is really like, without Hollywood or Sony-games telling you, this is the audiobook to get. The author is the narrator and he takes you into battle and out again for real. He also makes clear for family that stayed at home why, when the battle images are shown back home, he had to sit with his men. "They sicken of the calm who knew the storm" is finally explained.

Worth a listen

Apart from the annoying sections which are made to sound like they are recorded on analogue tape this is a great listen. An exciting insight into the life of an officer in the British Army.
