About this listen

Following The Magicians' Guild and The Novice comes the third book in the phenomenally popular Black Magician Trilogy, from international Number One best-selling author Trudi Canavan.

Over 3 million Trudi Canavan copies sold worldwide.

In the city of Imardin, where those who wield magic wield power, a young street-girl, adopted by the Magician's Guild, finds herself at the centre of a terrible plot that may destroy the entire world....

Sonea has learned much at the magicians' guild and the other novices now treat her with a grudging respect. But she cannot forget what she witnessed in the High Lord's underground room - or his warning that the realm's ancient enemy is growing in power once more. As Sonea learns more, she begins to doubt her guildmaster's word. Could the truth really be as terrifying as Akkarin claims, or is he trying to trick her into assisting in some unspeakably dark scheme?

Praise for Trudi Canavan:

"Epic, vivid and believable." (Guardian)

Critic reviews

"A wonderfully and meticulously detailed world, and an edge-of-the-seat plot, this book is a must for lovers of good fantasy." (Jennifer Fallon)

Good but hugely abridged.

There's two versions of this on audible, this one which has good narration but is hugely abridged, or another which is unabridged but has terrible narration. It's a pity this narrator doesn't do the unabridged version too.

Absolutely Gripping

I enjoyed the previous two volumes in this trilogy a lot, but this final volume is absolutely gripping. Some excellent plot twists, a bravura ending, I really couldn't stop listening to this.

The density of plot in this final volume means that in some ways I would have preferred an unabridged version (at time of writing, not currently available on Audible) but after sampling both Richard Aspel's accented narration of the unabridged volumes and Kellie Bright/Samantha Bond's narration of the abridged editions I definitely preferred the latter.

I'm new to Trudi Canavan but will definitely be moving on to her next trilogy. This one has been one of my best Audible purchases.

A gripping read

I couldn't wait to get back in the car to carry on listening to this book. I wish there were more in the series after this one.

Too much cut from the books

This trilogy is one of my favourites and I have enjoyed listening, however it was disappointing to see how much of the story was cut. Would have loved to listen longer and get the full story!

Canavan rocks again with book 3

A good abridged version of the excellent book as the trilogy reaches its climax.
Narrated quite well with character voices to match

Disappointed…

I love this collection. And Samantha Bond reads it brilliantly but I cannot believe how much of the story is missing. Truly devastated.

High lord = high praise

The conclusion to the BMT trilogy doesn't disappoint. Nothing but praise for this book.

Flawed but brilliant

The writing is excellent and the story compelling. But unlike the first two books, character development is somewhat sacrificed for the plot. Whilst I wanted to finish reading, I did not feel much tension towards the climax, as I never really felt the main characters were in danger of dying. I was wrong in regards to one, but that was not right until the very end.

Disappointed

I had high hopes for this as a friend recommended it. I found the writing style to be very grating, I lost count of how many times Akarin's lip "curled" - it honestly must have mentioned his curly lip in every chapter!!! It put me off and just made me feel like the book was lacking as the same descriptions were used repetitively.
